UpWrite Reading Series, screenwriter and
playwright J. Rufus Caleb will show his
award-winning movie and answer questions.
BENNY'S PLACE
(1981) was directed by
Michael Schultz and features
Louis Gossett, Jr., Cecily Tyson, Anna Maria
Horsford. Recognized for numerous
awards, including an
“Original Television Drama,” nomination, 1982
Writers Guild of America TV/Radio Writing
Awards; “Best TV Movie,” 1982 Beverly
Hills-Hollywood NAACP Image Awards;
and a "The 10 Best TV
Movies of 1982," selection by Judith Christ for
TV Guide Magazine, this story
is about an aging African-American tool
repairman who is employed to operate a repair
shop ("Benny's Place") in a steel mill. Pressure
is placed on him by his superiors to train a
younger African-American man to do his job, in
order that a
token African American might be qualified for a
management position.

J. Rufus Caleb

Building Auditorium
As part of the LHU
UpWrite Reading Series, screenwriter and
playwright J. Rufus Caleb will discuss his work.
LHU Theatre students will perform a scene or
excerpt. J. Rufus Caleb has written for theater,
radio, and television. His play The Rehearsal,
developed at Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey
and The New Harmony Project, is included in The
Best Short American Plays 1996-1997. His
teleplay Benny's Place received the 1981
Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference
Theatre Award for Best Conference Play and was
later produced for ABC television. The
production of his radio play The Devil and Uncle
Asa received the 1993 Special Achievement Award
from the National Federation of Community
Broadcasters. Caleb has received fellowships
from the Pennsylvania Arts Council and an NEA
grant to produce and direct his radio script
Moods For Jazz, an adaptation of the Langston
Hughes poetry book, Ask Your Mama. His
fiction and poetry have appeared in journals
such as Obsidian, Shenandoah and The William and
Mary Review. Caleb is an associate professor of
English at the Community College of
Philadelphia. Free and

Authors' and UpWrite Reading Series;
director, actor, and playwright Laurie McCants
will read from and discuss her play
Susquehanna:
Mighty, Muddy,
Crooked River
of
the Long Reach.
LHU theatre students may also perform.
McCants co-founded the Bloomsburg Theatre
Ensemble in 1978. An active member of the
Network of Ensemble Theaters and Theatre Without
Borders, McCants carries her work beyond
Bloomsburg. With BTE, she performed in a
five-nation African tour. She toured her
music-theatre piece THE ALEXANDRIA CARRY-ON,
created in collaboration with composer/performer
Theo Bleckmann, to Egypt, and she collaborated
with the Egyptian puppet theatre company WAMDA
in creating the bilingual OUR SHADOWS. She has
served as an Adjunct Professor at Bucknell
University since 1986. She continues making
original work with her theatre company; in 2006
she and BTE created SUSQUEHANNA: MIGHTY, MUDDY,
CROOKED RIVER OF THE LONG REACH. She is
currently developing a solo music-theatre
piece, INDUSTRIOUS ANGELS, inspired by the
poetry of Emily Dickinson.

A native of southeastern Pennsylvania, K.A. Hays
publishes poetry, verse translations,
and fiction. An MFA graduate of the literary
arts program at Brown, she currently holds the
Stadler Emerging Writer Fellowship at Bucknell.
A native
of Pittsburgh, poet and creative nonfiction
author Erinn Batykefer earned an MFA from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently, she
is the Stadler Poetry Fellow at Bucknell
University where she is Stadler Associate Editor
of the literary magazine West Branch.
