|Assessment of Program Student
The primary use of student learning assessments is to guide faculty and the University in its efforts to improve student learning of knowledge and skills that are essential for our students to succeed in school and the work place. Additionally, student learning assessment is one source of data used during annual program reviews and in determining allocation of finances.
Every academic program at LHU is required to participate in assessments of both General Education and Program Student Learning Outcomes. Important information and guidelines concerning these learning assessments can be found in the tabs above.
Where to go for help?
The Outcomes Assessment Committee and Academic Affairs Assessment Council are available to help faculty and programs with assessment of both General Education and Program Learning Outcomes. Questions regarding General Education assessments should be directed to the OAC while questions related to Program Learning Assessment should be directed to the AAAC.
The Flow of Learning Assessment Data & Feedback at LHU
The process for assessing student learning at Lock Haven University and using those results to strengthen the instructional and curricular processes across campus is guided by communication and decisions made by faculty in collaboration with administrative personnel seeking to provide support for ongoing improvement so that the student learning process is as meaningful as possible.
The Outcomes Assessment Committee (OAC), made up of representatives of all academic programs on campus, works closely together to monitor learning assessment on campus and to ensure that resources are provided to assist programs and faculty in completing expected assessment responsibilities according to a designated timeline each year. These resources include helpful strategies as well as updated rubrics, templates and instructions to complete the annual process for assessing student learning in a consistent and valid manner.
The flow of feedback based on assessment processes and results includes communication between academic programs, Deans, OAC, the Academic Affairs Assessment Council (AAAC), UCC as well as the Strategic Planning Oversight Committee (SPOC), which monitors the alignment of campus activities to the Strategic Plan. The chart shows that the AAAC monitors all learning on campus but relies on the OAC to guide the General Education Learning Assessment component and to provide feedback to programs, UCC and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) on an annual basis. Of course it is important that the UCC and OAC work closely together to make sure the information feedback process allows faculty and academic programs to receive learning results and feedback for continual improvement of learning on campus.
Not only is the assessment of student learning important for General Education learning outcomes, but the AAAC then monitors and guides annual reporting of student learning in all academic programs on campus. The process that is set up allows assessment coordinators of all academic programs to report on annual learning results within TracDat and highlight actions taken by program faculty based on the learning results for continual improvement.
The deans review the annual results and actions and make decisions, including those related to expenditures, based on areas of need highlighted in the reports. Faculty are provided with information and feedback through the UCC which is made up of all department chairpersons, as well as including University Days sessions as a forum for discussing learning results and for communicating information and feedback to faculty related to the process of assessing student learning at LHU.
