The discovery of the Marcellus Shale natural gas reserve has created jobs in our area. Through an exclusive grant with Marcellus ShaleNET, we are pleased to offer these options for training in a variety of Marcellus Shale careers. 

ShaleNET Talent Match is the result of a grant funded by the Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. Its mission is to design a comprehensive recruitment, training, placement, and retention program for high priority occupations in the natural gas drilling and production industry.

Local Residents Earn CDL’s Through ShaleNet Program

LHU partners with CPI to provide workforce training for natural gas industry 

Lock Haven University, ShaleNET certified training provider, recently partnered with the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology (CPI), to run their first ShaleNET CDL certification. A Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required for many jobs in the natural gas industry. The Class A CDL permits license holder to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. 

On July 12 the partnership certified 8 local residents in the program. All of the participants successfully obtained their Class A CDL’s.  The program began on June 4 and was held at CPI’s campus in Pleasant Gap, Centre County.   

This 260-hour intensive program certifies and prepares successful graduates for entry-level truck and tractor-trailer operating jobs in the natural gas drilling and production industry.  The first 80 hours of the program are in the classroom covering topics ranging from resume and cover letter writing, communication & leadership skills, to safety training.  The CDL program provides practical skills such as loading, docking, securing and transporting cargo, delivering hazardous materials safely, backing and much more.  The training is conducted in anenvironment that helps students understand the mental and physical demands of gas industry production work.  The CDL training is one of five courses developed by ShaleNET. 

Samuel S. Williams III of Lycoming County participated in the class.  He said, “I knew from the start I was eager to get involved with the trucks. I was very intimidated when we first started working with the trucks. I didn't know how to drive standard, nor was I ever in a tractor-trailer.  Overall the program was successful; we all obtained our CDL's.”  

Todd Taylor, Director of Adult and Post-Secondary Education at CPI, summed up the benefits of the program for the participants and for the region. “We are very excited with the results of our first ShaleNET natural gas training program offered in partnership with Lock Haven University. The students that completed the program received valuable soft skills training and industry certifications needed for success in the gas industry, as well as specific CDL training that culminated in the students earning their Commercial Driver’s License at graduation. Prior to enrollment, the local CareerLinks played a part by doing an excellent job in identifying students with the requisite work ethic and capabilities needed for long-term success in the workplace. I look forward to working with LHU and our partner CareerLinks in helping our region’s workforce obtain ‘job ready’ skills through future ShaleNET training programs.” 

Shannon Tyson, LHU’s Manager of Workforce Development, stated, “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our first ShaleNET CDL cohort. The feedback from all of the participants was very positive. The approximate cost for this program in total is $50k and we were able to provide it free to the participants through our ShaleNET grant. We look forward to continued success with additional programs and our partnerships. In the coming weeks, we will begin planning our second cohort. I encourage anyone interested in obtaining their CDL to apply.”

Applicants for Marcellus ShaleNET training must meet several requirements. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be drug free, pass a physical exam, pass a background check, and pass a physical aptitude test. All participants are expected to pay a one-time fee of $150 to cover these assessments.  

ShaleNET is funded by a grant awarded under the Community-Based Job Training Grants as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. 

Although open to everyone, the ShaleNET grant focuses on getting the unemployed, dislocated, underemployed, low-income, youth, and veterans employment in the natural gas industry in jobs with a clear career pathway that offers family-sustaining wages.
