Timeline for Secondary Education English Majors (effective Nov. 6, 2007)

During Freshman Year

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Take ENGL100 and ENGL220 (C or better)

 

Take two math courses numbered 101 or higher (C- or better)

 

Complete Diversity Profile Plan (obtain form at Robinson 611; fill out form, scan it into LiveText, and submit the form to Robinson 611).

 

            Complete Communication and Disposition Self-Evaluation in LiveText (under Forms); a hard copy of the Self-Evaluation is available at Robinson 611.

 

Pass Praxis One Tests: Reading (code #10710), Writing (code #20720), Math (code #10730).  Pick up registration information in Robinson 611 or at www.ets.org/praxis.  Passing scores are Math 173+, Reading 172+, Writing 173+ (or Math 171+, Reading 171+, Writing 170+ & Composite Total 521+).  The tests are offered six times each year., three times on the LHUP campus.  Typically, there is a 1-credit Praxis study course offered each semester.  You must pass these tests before you can be admitted into Block I.  The scores must be recorded at Robinson 611.

 

Obtain Act 151 Child Abuse and Act 34 PA State Criminal Record clearances; the applications are available at Robinson 611.  Act 151 and Act 34 must be renewed annually and recorded in Robinson 613.  An FBI Criminal History clearance is also required.  The clearance does not have to be renewed if you remain an active LHU student.  (If for some reason you leave LHU, then the clearance is no longer valid at LHU.  Upon reapplication to LHU, another FBI clearance is needed.)  The applications can also be found at the following web sites:

During Fall Semester of Sophomore Year

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Submit evidence of negative TB Test.  The test, which is good for two years, can be done at Glennon Infirmary or by a private physician; the results must be recorded in Robinson 613.

 

Take EDUC101, PSYC103 no later than fourth semester (C- or better).

 

During Spring Semester of Sophomore Year (Block I)

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Successfully complete all Block I courses (EDUC205, EDUC212, ENGL206)

 

Begin construction of Developing Portfolio in LiveText

 

Complete Candidacy Application during 1st four weeks of Block I (obtain form at Robinson 611; submit completed form to Robinson 611)

 

            Complete Technology Self-Assessment in LiveText (found under “Forms”)

 

            Complete Student Works Consent Form (the form will be completed in the Freshman & Transfer Information Meeting, but it is also available at Robinson 611)

 

During Junior Year

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Earn C- or better in speech, history, 2 lab sciences

 

Complete 20 hours diverse field experience (10 of these hours are fulfilled in Block I; the other 10 must be completed on your own—for example, the after-school tutoring program at Roosevelt Middle School.)

 

Complete Application to Present Developing Portfolio (Deadline: February 14)

 

Complete Developing Portfolio in LiveText with the following artifacts:

1.        Act 151 & 34 Clearances (applications available Robinson 611; must be renewed annually)

2.        Evidence of negative TB Test (test can be done at Glennon Infirmary or by a private physician)

3.        Diversity Verification Form(s) for 20 hours diverse field experience

4.        Diversity Essay (based on one of the 10-hour experiences)

5.        Two standards-based lesson plans that have been scored by the English program coordinator

6.        3 Communication & Disposition Competency Forms completed by secondary discipline faculty members

7.        Proof  of Liability insurance (least expensive is through PSEA--apply at: http://www.psea.org/topic.cfm?SID=14)

8.        Praxis One Score Report indicating passing scores: Math 173+, Reading 172+, Writing 173+ (or Math 171+, Reading 171+, Writing 170+ & Composite Total 521+)

9.        Degree Audit showing C- or better in composition, literature, speech, 2 maths, 2 lab sciences, and history course; C or better in all major courses; 3.0 GPA overall and in major. (If any of these courses are not completed prior to presenting the portfolio, they must be completed concurrent with block 2)

Schedule and make Developing Portfolio Presentation with English program coordinator.  If you score proficient for each rubric element and have all portfolio requirements completed, you will be considered Stage III and be eligible for the professional semester.  If any rubric element is scored below proficient or any portfolio requirement is incomplete, the Program Coordinator will develop a Remediation Plan that must be completed prior to enrollment in the professional semester.

 

Complete Portfolio Presentation Reflective Essay. 

 

Update clearances, TB test, liability insurance as needed.

 

During Fall Semester of Senior Year (Block II)

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Successfully complete all Block II courses (EDTF310), ENGL312, PSYC317)

 

Complete 60 hours field experience (36 hours in ENGL206; 36 hours in ENGL312)

 

Attend student teaching meeting and complete a Student Teaching Application by Oct. 2.

 

Attempt to pass Praxis Two Test (code #10041).  You cannot student teach without having attempted to pass Praxis II.  Scores must be recorded at Robinson 611.

      

By End of Spring Semester of Senior Year (Student Teaching)

 

Maintain 3.0 GPA overall and in major

 

Earn C or better in all major courses

 

Attain passing score (160+) on Praxis Two Test (code #10041). 

 

Complete all required coursework

 

Complete 20 hours diverse field experience (if  not completed during block 2 then it must be completed during student teaching)

 

Present Senior Portfolio to English program coordinator with the Following Artifacts:

1.        Teacher Work Sample

2.        Proof of professional membership

3.        Two standards-based lesson plans

4.        3 Disposition/Communications Forms (one from each student teaching coop and one from the university supervisor)

5.        Student Teaching Competency Forms (1 from each placement)

6.        PDE Form 430 (1 from each placement)

7.        TWS Factor One from diverse clinical experience (completed during block 2, if diversity placement completed during block 2)

8.        Portfolio Reflections

9.        Additional artifacts required by the program

 

Score at least “Proficient” in every category on all Student Teacher Competency forms.
