It is never to early to plan for graduate school, but plan and prepare
before your senior year! Why? More time & less stress. So don't wait
until the last minute
|
Have a rough idea about what type of graduate school or program you are interested
in before you research; the more you know your interests, the
easier exploring options will be.
|
Spend
time exploring if a graduate degree is necessary to the career field you are
considering or pursuing. |
Speak
with your faculty advisor and other professors within the English
department about your interest in graduate school, because
they will be able to give you advice and assistance. |
Are
GRE's requirements (General Record Exam) for graduate school?
Yes, many schools require the GRE exam and possibly a GRE
subject exam. You need to check if the school or program you are
interested in requires a entrance exam. |
Know what you want out of graduate
school. Do not go in blind! Research schools and programs
thoroughly.
|
Can you afford graduate school,
especially if you have undergraduate debt? Yes there are ways to still
attend. Remember a graduate assistantship can help pay for some of
your schooling. Assistantships come in the form of teaching or research.
|
Know school's admission deadlines!
For many schools, the deadline for fall semesters can often be often early
January and for the spring semester early October. Keep in mind that each school's and program's deadlines are different!
|
Decide what are your goals for
graduate school and after graduation. If you want to attend graduate
school and it is a good option for you, then go for it! |
Be aware that most graduate schools
will probably require 2 copies of your official college transcript, you
GRE scores, possibly a sample of your work, and 2-3 letters of
recommendation. The earlier you submit your application and all of the
required forms the better. |
