What is English Club?
The English Club is open to any student at Lock Haven who is
interested in literature or writing--you do not have to be an English
major. The club meets about
once every two weeks and after a brief business meeting, we read poetry
and prose, either our own or that of a favorite author. We also get
together during the semester for parties and trips to places that have
literary significance ( New York City, New Orleans, and San Francisco).
Many English Club members belong to Sigma Tau Delta, a national
honor society for English students. Sigma Tau Delta membership is
not necessary to be part of the English Club.
If you are interested in joining, contact Prof. Bob Myers (#2236,
rmyers3@lhup.edu).
Boston Trip
This club is legendary for its
trips to places of literary interest, and our trip this year is to Boston
and nearby Concord, the home of authors such as Hawthorne, Thoreau, and
Emerson. We will be going
over spring break, and if you are interested in joining us, it's important
that you attend club meetings and participate in our fundraisers.
New York City Trip
Another tradition is the fall trip
to New York City. We will be
going Saturday, November 16, and spend the entire day in the city.
This year seating is limited to 12, so again, priority will be
given to active members.
Car Wash
On Saturday, September 28 we will be washing cars in the
K-Mart parking lot from 10-2. If
you can help, please contact Dana (dcicilio@lhup.edu).
Book Sale
Thanks to generous faculty members, we have a lot of very
good used books. Our sale
will be from Tuesday, October 15 to Friday October 18.
If you have any used books, please bring them to Myers's office
(Raub 412). If you can work
at the book sale, contact Dana (dcicilio@lhup.edu).
Sigma Tau Delta
The following people have been nominated for STD offices:
Alan Vezina (President), Kristen McLaren (Vice President), Amanda Barbich
(Treasurer), Rachael Gillis (Secretary), Dana Ciciliot (Historian).
Further nominations will be accepted at the next meeting (9/19) and
then voting will take place. If you are a STD member and would like to nominate someone
(including yourself), contact Myers.
If you are interested in joining STD, contact Myers. The STD initiation will be Saturday, November 23, at Myers's
home in State College. After
the initiation, anyone who is interested can go with the club to a
performance of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream at Penn State
(tickets $10.50).
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 19, from 5-6
p.m. in Raub 405. We've come
up with an idea that should make our readings more interesting. Before the meeting, send Myers an email (rmyers3@lhup.edu)
that has the text of either original work (poetry or short passages from
fiction) or work by authors whom you admire.
A collection of these readings will be distributed to everyone
before the meeting and then some of these works will be read and discussed
at the meetings.
