<title>Lock Haven University Awarded Military Friendly Schools </title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/military.htm</link>
<description>Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named Lock Haven University (LHU) to the coveted Military Friendly Schools ® list. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools ® list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

&quot;Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools ® shows Lock Haven University's commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,&quot; said Sean Collins, Director for G.I. Jobs and Vice President at Victory Media. &quot;As interest in education grows we're thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools,&quot; said Sean. Complete survey methodology is available at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/methodology
The Military Friendly Schools ® media and website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services to those who served.
&quot;We are honored to be recognized as a military friendly institution. Our troops put their lives on the line every day for the safety of Americans. LHU wants to show our gratitude and support when the troops return home,&quot; says Michael Fiorentino, President of Lock Haven University.
Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools ® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey results that comprise the 2013 list were independently tested by Ernst &amp; Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by G.I. Jobs.

-More-
Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. A full list of board members can be found at http://militaryfriendlyschools.com/board.
A full story and detailed list of 2013 Military Friendly Schools ® will be highlighted in the annual G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools ®, distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The Guide and associated media will also be featured at the Carrier Classic college basketball game on Nov. 9, anchored by a playoff between The Ohio State University and Marquette University on the deck of the USS Yorktown. Both participating schools are on this year's list of Military Friendly Schools ®.
Victory Media is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business founded in 2001. Victory's free, data-driven, Military Friendly ® lists can be found at www.gijobs.com/2012Top100 www.militaryfriendlyschools.com and www.militaryfranchising.com. Victory's lists are also published in G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse, Vetrepreneur magazines, republished in national and local periodicals and are frequently cited on national and local TV stations.

Bill Kieser of Sanders Funeral Home in Williamsport endorsed the project with a letter of support for the grant. Jugan and Schaefer received the $750 grant award from the York Children's Foundation on Wednesday at Sanders Funeral Home.

&quot;Seeing as this was the first time we have written a grant, it was a challenge for us but a great learning opportunity,&quot; Schaefer said.

The funding will make it possible for struggling children to take educational lessons, obtain a musical instrument or participate in another activity that will give them a renewed sense of hope for the future, said Pamela Wollet, Partners to Promise Project Director. Volunteers share their time and talents with children who are experiencing life-changing hardships, such as a death in the family, divorce or poverty.

&quot;We are very pleased with our success and extremely happy we could help support these less fortunate children with a brighter future,&quot; Jugan said.

Recreation Management Professor Leonard Long said students are often more passionate and produce a higher caliber of work when they are collaborating with a &quot;real&quot; agency for the class project. Both students credited Long's Finance and Acquisition class with giving them the skills they needed for the successful grant application. Wollet's input also made the grant possible, they said.

&quot;It's a win-win for everyone, and we are pleased to provide this service to the various non-profit agencies in Clinton and Lycoming Counties,&quot; Long said.

<title>Lock Haven University Council of Trustees Names Building </title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/Willis.htm</link>
<description>Lock Haven University's Council of Trustees recently designated the Health Professions Building as the &quot;Willis Health Professions Center&quot;. Situated on Railroad Street, this building currently houses the University's Health Sciences and Physician Assistant programs, and is the home of the Greenberg Auditorium. The Trustees' resolution honors the University's former president, Dr. Craig Dean Willis, for his contributions to the growth of the University.
Dr. Willis served as president of Lock Haven State College and Lock Haven University from July 24, 1982 through July 31, 2004, retiring with President Emeritus status. During his tenure, enrollment doubled. In addition, the budget of the University grew from $15 million to nearly $60 million, creating an increase in the economic impact of the University on the surrounding communities from $9.5 million to $50 million. Dr. Willis also was instrumental in increasing the size of the landscape of Lock Haven University, with the number of buildings built or acquired increasing from 24 to 48, and included 55 campus renovation projects.
President Willis is considered one of the founders of the University's Clearfield Branch Campus along with local leaders and state legislators, which provides higher education opportunities to that part of the region. There was an increase of 20 undergraduate programs and the introduction of four new graduate degree programs during the 22 years served by Dr. Willis. &quot;Dr. Willis had a passion for strong academics to serve the students of the Commonwealth. He advocated for the physician assistant graduate program to be offered at LHU, which is now one of the top programs in the nation. The selection of the Health Professions Building was a natural choice to memorialize Craig Willis' contributions in this way,&quot; says Michael Fiorentino, President of Lock Haven University.
&quot;Dr. Craig Willis gave 22 years of commendable service to the University, and many initiatives, capital campaigns, scholarship opportunities, and general improvements to the facilities, programs, and the fiscal health of the University was implemented during his tenure.  It is fitting to honor such a distinguished friend of LHU,&quot; Fiorentino adds.    Dr. Willis commented, &quot;I am thrilled and delighted to receive this distinguished honor, yet mindful of the fact that everything accomplished was a team effort.  I thank everyone involved.&quot;

<title>LHU Students Show Their Appreciation Through Outreach</title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/outreach.htm</link>
<description>LHU Students Show Their Appreciation Through Outreach

On the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, Lock Haven University (LHU) students gave thanks in their own way. Nineteen students from the LHU Outreach for Humanity Club advised through the LHU MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship traveled to Point Pleasant Beach, NJ to assist with Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief efforts.

Seton DiCorcia, an LHU student and Point Pleasant resident spoke of the destruction left in the wake of super storm Sandy: &quot;The little bungalows that sat a block away from the beach are now unlivable. When you walk into some of these houses you see the water line where the ocean came through.  Between the ocean and the three lakes in town, many homes were destroyed due to the water damage. People lost everything. It is four weeks after the storm and part of the town is still without power because it is unsafe for it to be turned back on.&quot;

Volunteers in Point Pleasant are currently being organized through the Durand Masonic Lodge. Community members, including the DiCorcia family, have been coordinating residents that need help cleaning out their homes with any volunteers that are interesting in lending a hand. The Lodge has had over 800 volunteers, 19 of which were LHU students, come through and clean up over 300 homes.

The LHU students completed over 300 hours of community service as a group that weekend. Tyreek Renwrick, an LHU student Americorps member who attended the trip stated, &quot;We assisted multiple families by shoveling sand, cleaning out basements and garages, and removing damaged furniture from houses.  One group demolished a deck that been detached from the house, and another group cleared walkways.  The trip to New Jersey was a very humbling experience and showed me how grateful people can be for just a little bit of help.&quot;

The LHU MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship also coordinated a toiletry and school supply drive on campus.  Morgan Cummings, a student worker in MountainServe and coordinator of the trip and supply drive, stated, &quot;With the help of the University, the Lock Haven community, and First Quality, we were able to collect over $2,700 worth of toiletry items and school supplies.  All of these items were brought down to Point Pleasant and distributed to the 22 shelters throughout Ocean County as well as schools in the area.  The generosity of everyone from this community was overwhelming- people I didn't know that had been given my name were approaching me to find out how they could help.  So many giving individuals came out of the woodwork and really stepped up to help others in need.  I'm so thankful to be part of such a group of kindhearted people.&quot;

Assistant Professor Rebecca L. Stewart, Ph.D from the HPE Department had a personal connection to some of the Long Island NY communities. She worked with LHU students, staff, and faculty to bring needed items for Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts with two trips to the area with clothing , blankets, toiletry and food items.

Both groups reported that the specific needs were met in their relief efforts, and ongoing support for Hurricane Sandy Relief can be found by contacting agencies, such as:

<title>CNN Top Hero was International Education Week Keynote Speaker</title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/CNNHERO.htm</link>
<description>As part of International Education Week last week, Derreck Kayongo visited Lock haven University as the keynote speaker. Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project and one of CNN Top Heroes, is a true example of someone thinking on a global scale. Originally from Uganda, Kayongo and his family fled to Kenya after living under the dictatorship of Idi Amin, and eventually relocated to the US.
The son of a man who made soap, Kayongo was surprised to see how much soap was wasted in American hotels; this was the beginning of the Global Soap Project. Although it took many years to build, the GSP has distributed soap in many countries and helped many people who would be much more susceptible to disease without soap. Kayongo's perseverance was just one moral of his story.
Speaking to a packed Hamblin Hall, Kayongo used his energy to keep the attention of the audience while he spoke about the importance of being involved in big stories and doing big things. He shared his experiences - from coming to the US as a Ugandan refugee, to his first soap making experience, to the present success of the Global Soap Project - Kayongo talked about failures and triumphs and how to learn from all experiences.
&quot;Falling short is not failure,&quot; Kayongo said. He encouraged the audience to keep working towards their goals and that even if they are falling short, to fall in the right direction. The success of the Global Soap Project was the result of many falls in the right direction, Kayongo said.
To end the night, Kayongo got the audience involved and taught them the words to an African song (see link below). Singing in Swahili and dancing ended the program on a high note. Derreck Kayongo is one example of a global citizen that has made a difference and he challenged everyone he spoke with to do the same thing. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151147563664624

<title>LHU Hosts Videoconference on PASSHE Entrepreneurial Forum</title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/videoconference.htm</link>
<description>Lock Haven University's President Dr. Michael Fiorentino, Jr. hosted a reception which was followed by a video-conferencing forum. The forum highlighted the Pennsylvania State Legislature's recently passed legislation--Higher Education Modernization Law (Act 132 of 2012). The forum was held on October 23, 2012, in the Greenberg Auditorium. It was attended by faculty, administrators, staff, and guests such as Pennsylvania Biotechnology, PulseTor, Croda, Gannett Fleming, and HOPE Enterprise, Inc.
Dr. Donna Wilson, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, explained some of the salient features of the Act 132. Under Act 132, new avenues have been created for commercialization of products and inventions. &quot;Universities are now permitted to enter into license agreements for production, distribution, and sale of faculty-invented intellectual property with company owned by the faculty/staff-inventor or a company that employs the faculty or staff inventor,&quot; says Dr. Wilson.
The Forum presenters delivered their presentations via videoconference from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The presenters included PASSHE Chancellor John C. Cavanaugh, Dr. Ronald Huss, Associate Vice President Research and Technology, Penn State University, and Mr. Jim Rooney, President and CEO of AMTV. &quot;The speakers really explained in-depth the scope of the legislation. The Modernization Act extends an exciting opportunity to PASSHE faculty and staff in engaging business, university, and community partnerships facilitating economic growth of the Commonwealth,&quot; says Dr. Fiorentino. Following the video forum, Dr. Marian Tzolov, LHU Associate Professor of Physics, shared the technology he developed on methods for deposition of electrodes on polymer light emitting devices. The patent application for this technology was approved in August 2012 by the US Patent &amp; Trademark Office.

<title>Lock Haven University's Nursing Program Recommended for Full Five-Year Accreditation</title>
<link>http://www.lhup.edu/news_releases/2012/nursing.htm</link>
<description>The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) concluded its initial onsite visit of Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus' Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program October 18, 2012. Lock Haven University's program was found in compliance with all six NLNAC standards - Mission and Administrative Capacity; Faculty and Staff; Students; Curriculum; Resources; and Outcomes.
The Nursing Department received a recommendation for its RN to BSN program for a Full 5-Year Accreditation, which is the maximum awarded for initial accreditation. The official approval will occur at the NLNAC Board of Commissioners meeting March 7-8, 2013. &quot;The process and preparation for this visit was rigorous and introspective, the Commission met with students, faculty, administration, and community members and continuously commented on the support and high regard for Lock Haven Clearfield Campus' program, says Dr. Fay Cook, Director of Lock Haven University's BSN program.
&quot;This is excellent news not just for Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus but for the entire university and community,&quot; says Michael Fiorentino, President of Lock Haven University. The BSN program provides upper division opportunities facilitating mobility of graduates from Associate Degree and Diploma programs, allowing them the opportunity to enhance their education and career options. The program is designed to build on the student's knowledge and experience as a registered nurse, enhancing skills in critical thinking, case management, and leadership roles.
Full accreditation for the BSN ensures all Lock Haven University graduates will be eligible for Master's Degree programs nationwide. The BSN provides a basis for the next step forward to graduate education for which several of our students have already begun to investigate and apply.
-More-__________________________________________________________
Lock Haven University, 401 N. Fairview Street
Lock Haven, Pennsylvania 17745

The RN to BSN program began fall 2009. The first graduating class will be December 2012. Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus' Associate of Science in nursing program is also fully accredited through the NLNAC since its first graduating class in 1992. The NLNAC is nationally recognized as a specialized accrediting agency for both post-secondary and higher degree programs in nursing education. The university maintains a high standard for each of our academic programs. Having our high standard recognized by a national accrediting body such as the NLNAC is an honor.
