Developing ABE/GED Computer-Based Activities

Develop a Lesson Plan on a particular ABE/GED subject that integrates at least one computer-based activity into instruction.

Level:   Intermediate ABE 6-8

Topics: Parts of Speech - Adjectives

Creative Writing

Using a Computer Word Processing Application in Writing Assignments

List of Computer Literacy Skills To Be Acquired

                        Basic Computer Functions

                        Navigation Through an O/S - Windows 95

                        Introduction to Word Processing

The student can complete this lesson plan while learning WP.

Objectives

The student will:

·        define adjectives and their functions as a part of speech.

·        use adjectives to enhance basic writing.

·        consider his/her ability to write creatively.

·        employ a WP application to type, edit and print an original creative writing sample.

Procedure and Timeline

·        The student will receive instruction in Basic Computer Functions; Navigation Through an O/S - Windows 95; and an Introduction to Word Processing during the prior two weeks.

·        The student will watch demonstrations of WP functions; use these functions to manipulate writing examples provided by the instructor (i.e., editing sentences, then paragraphs).

·        The instructor and student will study adjectives, their forms and use. The student will first identify adjectives in sentences and paragraphs provided by the instructor (by using an instructor - prepared worksheet on paper or on the computer to highlight and underline adjectives); and then write (using the WP application) his/her own sentences and paragraphs.

·        The instructor will give the student a WP document – a creative writing sample with blank spaces where the student can insert adjectives using WP functions.

·        The student and instructor will discuss how using different adjectives effects the meaning, mood, etc. of the creative writing sample. In classroom instruction, groups of students can compare their choices.

·        The student will compose a creative writing sample of one or two paragraphs on a topic of his/her choice (or suggested by the instructor) using adjectives and create this with a WP application.

Evaluation

The instructor will base his/her evaluation on the following:

- Completed exercises - Adjectives should be correctly identified and underlined.

- A completed & printed creative writing sample showing appropriate adjectives inserted by the student.

- A completed and printed original creative writing assignment of 1 to 2 paragraphs showing proper use

of adjectives and sentence structure.

- Discussion of creative writing and use of adjectives to effect mood and meaning.
