Literacy in ABE
The goal of this lesson is to help ABE students develop some basic computer competencies, and build confidence and comfort while using the computer.
COMPUTER LITERACY SKILLS:
Turning on computer and monitor, Keyboarding, Hand-eye coordination, Accessing and Using hardware.
ACTIVITIES:
1. The instructor will present the topic to be covered, and the means by which the students will be expected to complete the assignment. This will be done in lecture format.
2. The instructor’s monitor will be elevated and facing the students, so that some of the functions of the computer can be demonstrated.
3. Students will be seated at computers and practice turning on the computer and monitor.
4. Students will access the "games" window and allowed to play solitaire, to develop hand-eye coordination.
5. Students will access the "accessories" window (assumes ms windows operating system) and practice using its tools.
6. Students will be given a written list of several items that must be accomplished using the accessories (e.g.; use the paintbrush to make geometric shapes, use the calculator to do math problems, type a brief note, etc.).
7. The instructor will walk around the room to provide assistance when necessary. The instructor should encourage the students to help one another.
8. If possible, let the students have a print out of their assignment.
EVALUATION:
Evaluation will be based on achievement of the learning objective.
LESSON PLAN:
OBJECTIVE: Using the tools in the "accessories" window the student will complete the assignment given by the instructor.

2.5 hours of instruction
