Computer Literacy Skills:
Turn computer and screen on.
Use mouse to find programs.

Use printer to print information needed/wanted or to download.
Use word processor and keyboard to type material into computer.
Use computer to make any corrections (ex. Spellcheck).

Activities:
Phase Two:
-Students will work in groups of two, in a cooperative group of four or individually.
Phase One:
I Students will turn the computer on and access the icon describing what they see and for what the program may be used on a worksheet.
I Students will turn the computer on and access MS Word, then type their spelling words and save them as indicated by the instructor on C drive or on disc or both, then print and save them.
P Students will practice their spelling words on the computer at least five times before testing, recording on a worksheet "missed words and the number of times each word was missed". (Work with a partner for tracking and verification).
I Students will hand write and enter a story about a wild animal on the computer, then print the copy.
I Students will review and make corrections to the story until satisfied, then print out the copy and save the story as indicated by the teacher.
I Students will make a spelling word list from the story, print a copy and save the list on disc as indicated by the teacher.
Phase Three:
P Students will access the Internet and investigate a list of web sites, composing a short paragraph about what is available through the web site. The information will be submitted to the group for critiquing.
G Students enter into the computer the web site information and a paragraph about the web site submitted from everyone in the group. These will be printed and handed out to other groups in the classroom, and saved onto disc and hard drive as indicated by the teacher.
G The group will investigate the other web site from the other groups, make any changes necessary to the paragraph that provides a view of web site focus and submit the changes to the other groups and to the teacher.
Phase Four:
G Students will investigate the Discover Magazine web site and make a list of topics they find available to explore.
I Students will individually choose a topic and investigate/research the topic at the web site, printing the material or pictures that they find.
I Students will access the research information from the Encyclopedia CD-ROM and library, noting their sources.
I Students will hand write a report on the subject they chose using the computer to do final entering, correcting and printing, saving the report as indicated by the teacher.
Phase Five:
G Students within the group will review and critique each other's reports, then submit them to the teacher.
I Students will revise the report as indicated by the group and the teacher.
Phase Six:
G Students will choose one of the topics of the group members and research further on the Internet using search engines.
G Students will record any places they find information to add to their report, including pictures.
G Students will revise their report adding to it as indicated, print, save as indicated by the teacher, and submit the printed copy to the teacher.
Phase Seven:
G Students will compose a bibliography, to be attached to the revised report (including the Internet sites), correcting, printing, saving and submitting to the teacher their final copy.
Phase Eight:
G Students will do a presentation before the class using any pictures they have found.
Evaluations:

and the results of their work.

Objectives:

utilizing the computer.

4. Students will be able to utilize the computer and MS
Word to identify and correct errors in spelling and grammar.
5. Students will be able to save information onto the
hard drive and a disc.
6. Students will be able to work in groups and
individually.
7. Students will be able to access and utilize the
Internet.
Materials:
Computer with
Internet access, search engines, MS Word, printer, keyboard, mouse and disc
drive.

Procedures/Steps:
In your group, decide the tasks for each
group member.
1. Using
the computer, access the Internet.
1. Make a list of the topics that you are interested in.
3. Find the site and choose a topic from the
Discover Magazine Web Site.

Make
sure it is one that you like and that no one else has picked it.
1. Use the site and the Encyclopedia CD-ROM Disc to
research the topic along with any other sites you may find (note sources).
2. Research and find any information that you need.
6. Download (print) the information that you
need to read.
1. Use the CD-ROM to research your topic, as well as the
library (note sources).
2. Print or copy the information that you need to read.
3. Handwrite a report on the subject, making revisions as
necessary.
4. Enter the information into the computer

6. Print two hard copies. One copy is to go to the
teacher and one to the group for critiquing.
7. Save the report (first computer draft) as indicated by
the teacher.
8. Revise as indicated by the returned copies, print the
final copy and save the report as indicated by the teacher.
