Computer Literacy Skills for ABE Students

 

A. List of computer literacy skills to be acquired by the ABE students:

  1. Students will acquire basic knowledge of computer components.
  2. Students will acquire basic knowledge of keyboarding.
  3. Students will acquire ability to use mouse.
  4. Students will become familiar with a basic word processing program, such as Microsoft Works.
  5. Students will be able to use printer to provide hard copy of work.

B. List of activities:

  1. Students will be given overview of computer hardware by instructor, using handout.
  2. Use of a typing tutorial will allow students to become familiar, or more proficient, with keyboarding.
  3. Use of basic games, such as Solitaire, will allow students to become proficient with mouse skills.
  4. A basic introduction to word processing will allow the student to compose a resume or simple correspondence.
  5. Students will learn to print a hard copy of work by using print key and by choosing print from File menu.

 

C. Evaluation procedures for student completion:

  1. Using a worksheet depicting computer hardware, student will correctly identify monitor, keyboard, printer, etc.
  2. Students will be comfortable and capable of using keyboard; and recognizing the placement of basic keys.
  3. Students will display ability to play simple games using the mouse.
  4. Students will generate simple correspondence, such as a letter or memo; or produce a simple resume.
  5. Students will provide a printed copy of a word processing paper.

D. Timeline for implementation:

Using a 4-week Career Development class as an example:

ABE Lesson plan:

GRADE LEVEL: ABE 5 – 8

OBJECTIVE: Student will be able to retrieve a document from a file, and using a correct copy as a guide, make corrections using basic word processing. Student will then print a hard copy of their work.

MATERIALS: Computer

Disk with word document

Printer

Correctly typed cover letter

PROCEDURE:

  1. Have student retrieve "Cover Letter" file from disk.
  2. Hand out correctly typed cover letter.
  3. Using the correctly typed cover letter as a guide, discuss the changes that will need to be made to the letter they have just retrieved.
  4. Review the functions of all keys they will need to make the necessary corrections. Clarify answers to all questions.
  5. Have students make corrections to cover retrieved from disk.
  6. Have students print a copy of their work.

EVALUATION:

  1. Student has made necessary corrections to cover letter.
  2. Student makes a printed copy of corrected cover letter.
