Internet INSITE 1

Title: Attention to Addresses

Grade Level: 9-12

Background Knowledge Required for Series: Students have knowledge of:

                Entering and exiting the computer, the Internet, and e-mail.
                Visiting various Web sites.
                Using Icons on the Toolbar.
                Printing from the computer.
                Using the mouse, the keyboard, and disks.

Lesson Duration (Timeline): One class session of 1-2 hours (more if you wish the student to have more experience).

Materials:

Computer System with printer and Microsoft Word.
Internet access with e-mail addresses established for classroom students and Instructor.
Paper for the printer and for student use.
Pencil or pen.
                Worksheets saved to a disk or file.
                MS Word File saved for the Instructor to send as an attachment.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:
Copy/move addresses to their own address book.
Print the addresses from the address book.
                Print the home page and Web pages of the web sites visited.

Procedures:

    1. Access the computer, find the worksheet file and print out a worksheet for Internet Insight I.
    2. Access the Internet Explorer (IE).
    3. Where you now are is your "home" page. Print the pages.
    4. Type in the address for microsoft - www(dot)microsoft(dot)com.
    5. Print the Web pages.
    6. Back out of that area to your home page.
    7. Click on the Mail Icon and open your e-mail.
    8. Highlight the address in the window then press Ctrl+C to copy and place the address on the clipboard. (mouse - Edit...Copy).
    9. Use ALT + Tab over and over until you return to Internet Explorer (IE).
    10. Click in the Address box of the Toolbar.
    11. Use CTRL + V (mouse - Edit...Paste) to paste the address.
    12. Visit as many Web sites as you can and print the Web pages, then save the addresses to your address book.
    13. Print the addresses in the address book out by accessing the address book and using the print Icon.

 

  1. Evaluations:

Students will:

1. Enter addresses into the address book.
2. Print addresses that they have moved to their address book.
3. Enter Web page addresses from the Web page to the address book.
4. Print the home page and the pages of any other Web site they visit to copy the address.

    2. Access the Internet Explorer (IE).
    3. Where you now are is your "home" page. Print the pages.

Pencil or pen.

Procedures:

A. Access the computer and print out the worksheet for Internet Insight 2
B. Access the Internet Explorer (IE).

Enter e-mail by clicking on the Icon.

    1. Enter your e-mail by using the instructions provided by the Instructor for your program.
    1. All messages to be sent or that have been received, or address book pages must be printed out, then identified by placing the name of the person, date, time, and other persons name on each printed copy.
    2. Click on the lightening bolt or press F5 to send and receive e-mail.
    3. Read the message the Instructor left, then print the message, sign and date it.
    4. Click on the "Reply" Icon. Write and send a message back to the Instructor using the Icon with wings. (This stores it in the OUTbox).
    5. Click on the lightening bolt or use F5 to send the message out.
    6. Save the address to your address book.
    7. Click on the "New Message" Icon.
    8. Compose a new message to send to your Instructor, print the message, put it in the OUTbox, then send it.
    9. Send/receive messages to the other class members as per address furnished by the Instructor.
    10. Print each message out before sending, replying, or answering.
    11. Print out the addresses that you have saved in your address book.

 

  1. Evaluations:

Students will have:

1. Received and sent messages from the Instructor and other members of the class or course.

2. Printed the messages that they sent (before they are sent) recording their name, the date and time, and the name of the person to whom the message is directed.

3. Printed the messages that they receive recording their name, the date, time, and person who sent the message.

4. Replied to messages sent to them (printing them out before sending them).

5. Saved the addresses of the message senders to their address book, then print the addresses out, placing their name at the top before turning it in to the Instructor.

    7. Create a folder called Instructor.
    8. Retrieve any new messages (some should be sent today).
    9. Move an e-mail message from a friend to the "friend" folder by click and dragging to the folder.
    10. Open the folder by double-clicking on it to verify that the message was placed correctly.
    11. Close the folder.
    12. Place the rest of your friend's messages into folders.

    2. While in MS Word, create a short message to the Instructor with your name included and save it to a file.
    3. Exit MS Word.
    4. Access the Internet Explorer (IE).
    5. Write an e-mail message to the Instructor and attach the Word file by clicking on Insert, find the file, and click attach. The file will be inserted as an attachment.
    6. Click the "send" button.
    7. Create and send attachments to at least two classmates.
    8. Send the messages, then click the lightening bolt, or press F5 to send and retrieve outside the mailbox.
    9. Open his/her messages. Right click on the attachment Icon, then choose the "Save As" command.
    10. Choose the location where you want to save the file, then type the file name and save it.
    11. Save all attachments in the same manner.
    12. Exit e-mail and the Internet.
    13. Access the file. Print out the message and label it with your name, the date and time, and the name of the person who sent the message.
    14. Repeat until all attachments are retrieved and printed out.
    15. Turn all worksheets and print outs in. Make sure all items are turned in from any previous exercises.

VIII.        Evaluations:

Students will
