Title:

Literature and the Arts on the Internet

Learner Level:

GED

Learner Background Knowledge:

Some keyboarding skills, Reading level of 9th grade or above as assessed on TABE, and approximately 6th to 7th grade math level as assessed on TABE.

Duration:

5 class sessions, each of which is 1 hour long.

Materials:

Computer with Internet access, instructor-prepared hand out with 20 questions (left to the discretion of the teacher) students will answer, pencil/pen, Contemporary’s GED book (pp: 35-44, 451-547, 800-813).

Objectives:

1. Using a computer with Internet access, students will visit pre-determined URL’s in order to answer questions related to literature and the arts.

2. Using a question and answer sheet prepared by the instructor, students will answer a minimum of 80% of the questions correctly.

Procedures:

(the following includes procedures are for all 5 lessons, but may not be used in every lesson).

1. Introduce topic to be covered, and the means by which students will be expected to complete the assignment using lecture format.

2. Explain to students how to use the Internet and a search engine. Provide hand outs to students with terminology relevant to the lesson.

3. Show the students an example of an Internet search. Your computer monitor should be visible to all students.

4. Allow students some time to search the Internet for things of interest to them.

5. Give students question and answer hand out.

6. Walk around classroom to help students who may be having difficulty.

7. Collect the answer sheets, correct them, and expand on the answers in class.

Evaluation:

Evaluation will be based on accomplishment of learning objectives.

Activities

Day 1:

1. Work on student’s computer comfort-level.

2. Explain assignment (i.e., how, where, when)

Day 2:

1. Students learn about search engines

2. Students search the net, based on their interest

Day 3:

1. Question sheet is handed out

2. Students begin to answer questions

Day 4:

1. Students continue to work on answer sheets

2. Students hand in completed answer sheets

Day 5:

1. Corrected answer sheets are returned to the students

2. Answers are expanded on during class by instructor
