Assignment 7
Leslie Foster
Let’s Chat Practitioner to Practitioner!
Objectives: Adult educators will be presented with the basic skills of online chats and given the opportunity to experience chatting hands-on.
Equipment: Computer with online access; a list of Internet chat groups; a topic or discussion question.
Procedure: Introduce the concept of group communication online. Discuss the time delay of E-mail, the limitations of news groups, and the confusing quick response time of the scrolling comments with chatting. First, have class E-mail each other to practice sending and receiving. Second, have class choose a newsgroup to browse. Ask for feedback as to what they are finding and if there are any interesting messages to read. Explain how you can also subscribe to listservs through your personal E-mail account. Warn class that you could log on one day and receive 79 messages from the listserv. Third, have class connect onto Telnet (and explain the differences between Window’s chatting and Dos based chatting.) Set up ID’s. Describe where they are and the room set-up. Take class into a private room. Ask class to respond to the topic or discussion question.
Evaluation: Each class member responds to the group online chat.
