TO USE
ONLINE CHATS
LEARNING LEVEL: Adult educators with limited computer literacy
BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Turning on a computer
Mouse skills
Keyboarding skills
TIME REQUIRED: 1-hour class
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Computers with Internet
access
Paper/pencil
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participant will be able
to:
- Access the Internet using Netscape Gold.
- Access a chat room by using URL provided.
- Converse with other educators by typing in
messages.
- Access different rooms in chat location.
- Set up date, time and topics for future chat
session.
PROCEDURES: Introduce online
chats, then guide participants using the
following steps.
1. Click on the "Netscape Gold" icon to access the Internet.
- Type in the appropriate password and click on
"Connect".
- After the Netscape screen appears, type in the
following URL at "Location": http://www.mylanders.com/chat.
Press Enter key or click left mouse button.
- The Mylanders Chat
Registration page will come up. Discuss directions on the page, then type
name, password and e-mail address.
- Note the following message displayed on the
screen: "You must hit "RELOAD" on the chat page to see
the latest conversation."
- Click on "Enter Chat". This will take
you to the Main Room.
- Place cursor in box at top of page. Type in a
message, then click on "Post".
- Continue to post messages. Click on
"RELOAD" to read other participant messages.
- To go into other rooms, click on
"Den", "Loft", or "Back Room".
- Brainstorm to choose topics and set date and
time for future chat session. Assign topics to each of the four chat
rooms.
- Each participant will write down date, time and
topics for future chat session.
- To leave the chat room, but stay on the
Internet, click on "Leave" at the top of the page. To get out
of the Internet, put down the File menu and click on "Close" or
"Exit".
EVALUATION
Participants will have a written record of date,
time and topics for future chat session. Participants will understand how to
use Mylanders Chat Room by following procedures from
lesson plan.
