Computer-based Learning Activity for Literacy Students

Assumpion: 1. Students are assessed and determined to be at upper end of definition of "literacy".

The literacy students will work in teams of two to navigate the Internet. While it is not the objective of this lesson, the students will also learn a bit about keyboarding, using a mouse, and developing hand-eye coordination.

OBJECTIVE:

Using a computer with Internet access and working in teams of two, the students will travel to a list of three pre-determined URLs that the instructor believes is relevant to the topic being discussed in class.

MATERIALS:

Computer

Internet ACTIVITIES:

Students will be expected to navigate to pre-determined URL’s.

PROCEDURES:

1.             Using a lecture format the topic to be covered will be introduced to the students, and the means by which they will be expected to complete the assignment.

2.             Students will be seated at computers (Internet access will already be established).

3.             A written list of the pre-determined URL’s will be given to the students.

4.             Students will be asked to type in the URL.

5.             The instructor will walk around the classroom in order to assure the URL is typed correctly.

6.             The instructor will direct the students to click the mouse at the appropriate time. The instructors computer will be facing the students, so that they may mimic the instructor’s actions.

EVALUATION:

Evaluation will be based on achievement of the learning objective. The instructor will assure that the learning objective has been met by reviewing computer screens of the teams.
