Compound Words

 

Grade Level: 1-3

Prerequisites:

·        Students will have had lessons on:

·        How to turn the computer on and off

·        How to use a mouse

·        How to open a word processing program

·        How to print open, use and save to a disk

·        How to print from the word processing program

·        How to access the Internet and find sites

·        How to download information from the Internet

Objectives:

·        Students will be able to:

·        Correctly identify compound words using the " * "

·        Correctly make compound words out of one word

·        Correctly identify compound words within paragraph/s by highlighting the words

Materials:

·        Computer with Internet access and mouse

·        Disk containing a Word document with Compound Words Worksheet (copy attached)

·        Printer

·        Pencil and highlighter

Procedures:

1.     Students will turn the computer on, put the disk in, and find the Word document on Compound Words.

2.     Teacher will provide oral instructions for the following.

3.     Students will identify the compound words by typing the symbol " * " in front of the compound word/s.

4.     Students will print the worksheet.

5.     Students will use the pencil to write their name and the date in the blank.

6.     Students will use to list of words and fill in the blanks to make new compound words.

7.     Students will access the Internet

8.     Students will find a site or their choice and download 1-2 paragraphs from the site.

9.     Students will highlight compound words from the printed paragraphs.

 

Evaluation:

·        Student has correctly identified compound words on Compound Word Worksheet.

·        Student has used the * to identify each compound word.

·        Student has printed a copy.

·        Student has used incomplete compound words to make new compound words by filling in blanks on the copy.

·        Student has accessed the Internet to find a site and download 1-2 paragraph/s.

·        Student has identified compound words from the text printed from the Internet.

Read all directions first. Ask for help if you need it.

Place the cursor at the beginning of each compound word and type a * (Shift-8, above the 8) to identify the words as compound words.

Print the page.

Write your name and the date on the printed page then follow the directions on the bottom of the page.
