Class Project for GED level 9-12
Objective:
Students will use the Internet to develop a deeper understanding of the use of nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
- Access a nuclear power web site
- Read information on nuclear reactors
- Use a diagram to visualize the process
- Investigate links for related information
- Practice writing skills by responding to author
Materials: Computer with Internet access

Pen/pencil
Procedure:
- Introduce the topic of steam power as a source of electricity (or re-introduce topic as one previously covered)
- Pass out worksheet
- Have students access Web site: www.public.iastate.edu/~smevela/nuchome.html
- Have students explore the site to find answers to worksheet
- Ask students to write down one vocabulary word from the site to "stump" the class
- If some students finish early, have them investigate some of the nuclear links from the page
- For extra writing practice, students may send their response to this site by the e-mail link at the bottom of the Web page
