Elementary Education, B.S.Ed.                       

The four-year program in Elementary Education leads to the Bachelor of Science in Education and prepares the student to teach all levels from kindergarten through grade six.

Students use the University's general education requirements to develop a sound academic background by earning concentrations of 15 to 24 semester hours in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and mathematics. By choosing classes carefully, or by attending summer sessions, students may also complete requirements for concentrations or minors in other academic specialties or in areas of professional education such as special education, reading, and early childhood education.  The program in elementary education has been redesigned recently and reflects state and national emphases on strong academics combined with extensive work in the methodology of teaching including many field experiences with children. Prior to student teaching, the senior year is capped with the elementary professional semester, an 18 semester hour "Block" of courses and experiences devoted entirely to methods of teaching and classroom management which are described below in more detail in the course listings EDUC472 through EDUC478.
