Q & A About Overlays

In 1998 Lock Haven University approved a series of changes to update the general education program for the students at the University. These changes included the addition of a series of overlays that would become part of the other course of study and program requirements of the University. The overlay requirements consisted of the following: External Experiences (EE), Information Literacy (IL), Multicultural (MC), and Writing Emphasis (WE). Specific details about the nature of the requirements for each overlay can be found on the Lock Haven University Web site at the following address:
http://www.lhup.edu/academic/acad_affairs/gen_ed_after.html

Specific courses that meet each of the overlay requirements can be found at the following web address:
http://www.lhup.edu/academic/acad_affairs/gen_ed_after.html

The master schedule each semester also lists any overlay that a specific course meets as a note that follows the course listing. Students may find out if any coursework they have previously completed meets an overlay requirement by clicking on the Gen Ed Overlays button when they are logged on to the Student Information System.

To determine what overlay requirements that a student must meet they must first know when they entered the University for their current course of study. Most advisors and students can determine how the overlays affect their course of study by referring to the table that follows, but further explanation and additional information follows the table.

Students should consult the schedule of courses each semester for those that meet one of the overlay requirements. They should consult with their academic advisor regarding which courses in their program meet overlay requirements and best meet the requirement for each program course of study.

Students may check their progress regarding overlays by selecting the Gen Ed Overlays Button when they are logged into their account from the Registrar's Office web page. Coursework transferred from other institutions do not carry any overlay designations at this time.

Students may request a waiver for any overlay requirement that they have not met, but that they have in good faith made every effort to complete. Students should contact their advisor to discuss such a waiver. Waivers are written documents that are initiated by the student and then signed by the advisor and the department chairperson. All waivers are in writing.
