Secondary Education, B.S.Ed.                         

The four-year programs in Secondary Education lead to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree.  Students are prepared to teach on the junior and senior high school levels grades 7 through 12, and K-12 in Foreign Languages.  Each student must specialize in one of the following major teaching areas:

Mathematics
Earth and Space Science (now B.S. Geology with concentration in Secondary Educ-Earth & Space Sci) Physics

English

Spanish

Foreign Language Program Majors - French, German, Spanish

Students are urged to take part in a foreign study programs abroad.  Students in Spanish and French will be required to demonstrate a proficiency level of "advanced" or higher on the ETS/ACTFL scale prior to student teaching.  They will be tested well in advance of the semester in which they are to student teach, and a program will be devised to assist students to achieve the requisite level.

Students who wish to complete a program in two foreign languages are required to complete the normal 24 sh beyond level IV in one language and 18 sh beyond level IV in the second.  Language levels I - IV as needed, otherwise free electives up to 12 sh.  Proficiency requirements apply in both languages.

Mathematics
The BS in Education with certification in Mathematics prepares the student to teach mathematics at the secondary level.  Many who graduate with this degree also teach computer science.  For entry into MATH200 (Secondary Education 1 Math Methods), the mathematics student must have passed or be presently enrolled in MATH141-142, MATH205 and EDUC101.
For entry into MATH316 (Secondary Education 2 Math Methods), mathematics students must have a 3.0 QPA in their major courses and teacher preparation courses and be eligible to student-teach during the next two semesters.
