Sociology,
B.A.

The
University offers a bachelor's degree with a major in
Sociology as well as a B.A. in Social Science with a
specialization in Sociology/Anthropology.
Sociology majors who are interested in criminal justice
administration may choose a concentration in the
Administration of Criminal Justice.
In addition, it offers minors of 18 sh in either
Sociology or Anthropology.
The
degrees in Sociology/Anthropology not only prepare the student
to enter graduate school in the disciplines, but they also
serve as an excellent foundation for entrance to other
graduate and professional schools.
Students have pursued careers in social and community
services, business and industry, law enforcement and
corrections.
A
major consists of a minimum of 32 sh in Sociology beyond
Introduction to Sociology.
Since a sound program in Sociology should include a
basic core of courses that provide a sound foundation on which
to build, the following courses in Sociology are required:
SOCI205, 206, 301 or 302, 352, 354, 402, and 404.
Beyond that the student may freely elect 11 sh of
courses in Sociology.
In addition, the student will take another 15 sh of
supporting courses in the Social Sciences area.
Those
interested in pursuing a specialization in Anthropology may
select a major in Social Science with a specialization in
Sociology/Anthropology.
This consists of 24 sh beyond the introductory courses
in Anthropology, and Sociology as follows: 12 sh in
Anthropology (ANTH102, two other Anthropology courses, and one
elective); 12 sh in Sociology (SOCI101, 352, 404, and one
elective); plus 3 sh of electives chosen from courses in
either discipline.
