The college environment should be one that encourages students to explore interests and options. We should send the message to students that exploring alternatives is a healthy activity. Yearly workshops for volunteer exploratory studies advisors and other faculty advisors are offered by the Exploratory Studies Advising Office. Faculty advising undecided students should feel free at any time to consult with the Coordinator of Exploratory Studies Advising. The following information should be helpful in advising undecided students:

Possible Discussion Topics for Advising the Exploratory Studies Student

1. What occupations have interested you over the years?

2. What subjects did you do well in and/or enjoy in high school?

3. What extra-curricular activities have you enjoyed and what did you learn about yourself while participating?

4. What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses?

5. What leisure activities do you enjoy?

6. Why have you come to college?

7. Describe you life five years after college.

8. What academic majors interest you and why?

9. How have you attempted to learn more about these majors? (Refer to Exploratory Studies Student “Game plan” on page 28).

10. What ‘roadblocks’ do you see for yourself in moving toward a decision on a major and how can I help you eliminate them?
