Master of Liberal
Arts
"As a
computer scientist, I have had little opportunity to
study literature, history, art or religion. Exposure to these
fields, through the MLA program at Lock Haven University,
has been incredibly challenging and exciting. I have enjoyed
every minute of it."
Dr. Cherie
M. Stevens, Professor of Computer Science
South Florida Community College, Avon Park, FL
"This
educational experience at LHU has helped me focus my goals
and redefine them more clearly and has also given me the
opportunity to achieve greater insight into this
world. This has been the best experience of my life."
Carolynne M. Timko, M.L.A.
Blossburg, PA
The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Master of Liberal
Arts degree program is a nonprofessional, interdisciplinary graduate program
for the intellectually curious adult whose baccalaureate
education is completed. This master's program is usually
completed within a two or two and a half year period.
Mission Statement
top
The Master of Liberal Arts program is designed for adults
who wish to study the liberal arts in depth. Its
focues is on the development of intellectual skills
that dispel illusion and foster the unimpeded activity
of our most fully human powers of thought and
action. The topics studied are chosen for their
ability to illuminate the perennial concerns of human
life, challenge the conventional assumptions of the
current age, and, above all, communicate the delight
of discovery and strength of understanding. The program will enhance a
student's ability to analyze, synthesize and appreciate a
broad spectrum of knowledge drawn from a variety of
disciplines.

Student

The MLA program is designed for any adult with a
bachelor's degree wishing to study the liberal arts in
greater depth, for professionals seeking to expand
their educational horizons, or for teachers wanted to
experience academic learning from a liberal arts

flexibility distinguishes this program from
traditional master's degrees, courses have been
designed with the adult learner in mind.

Academic Standards
Students are expected to maintain a minimum grade point
average of 3.000 to remain in good academic standing.
If a student's
GPA falls below 3.000, the student will be placed on
Academic Probation for one semester.
If, after the
probationary semester, a cumulative GPA of 3.000 is not
achieved, the student will be suspended for the following
semester. However, students may appeal this suspension
if the cumulative GPA is between 2.800 and 2.999.
Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Dean of the
College of Arts and Science within five days of
notification. If the appeal is granted, the student
will be placed on probation during the semester of
readmission. If a student chooses not to appeal a
suspension and then decides to return to the University
after a one-semester absence, the student must request
permission to return to the program by sending a letter to
the Office of Enrollment Services or complete the
Request to
Resume Studies Form.
Students may
appeal a suspension if they can document extraordinary
circumstances beyond their control (personal, medical,
serious family emergencies).
If a cumulative
GPA of 3.000 is not achieved during this probationary
semester, the MLA Coordinator will recommend dismissal from
the program. This recommendation will be forwarded to
the Dean for appropriate action. Dismissal is a
permanent separation from the University.
A student will be eligible to receive
the Masters of Liberal Arts degree upon the completion
of all program requirements with an overall GPA of 3.0.
The maximum timeline for completion of all requirements will
constitute six (6) years from the date of regular admission
status.

Capstone
Procedures
top
1. Upon completion of at least 15 credits of course
work, the student should have formulated a set of questions or
issues warranting further exploration through the conclusion
of a formal project. The Capstone Project may assume the
shape of a Research Thesis or a Creative Composition.
2. The student will select a faculty
member to act as the chairperson of the Capstone
Committee. This faculty member will advise and guide the
student throughout the project. Two additional faculty
members will act as reads on the committee. This
Capstone Committee should be formulated no later than the
semester before the actual project is started. Once the
committee is formulated, the student must submit a completed
form "Capstone Project Committee" with the Capstone
Project Proposal to the MLA Curriculum Committee.
3. The Proposal
The semester before the Capstone Project is begun, the student
must submit the following information as part of the Capstone
Project Proposal:
-
The Capstone Project Committee Form
(yellow).

A list of references of core sources for
the project.
-
An outline and description of the proposed
project.
4. The Capstone Project Proposal is
submitted to the MLA Coordinator for distribution to the MLA
Curriculum Committee for acceptance or rejection of the
project. The MLA Coordinator will notify the student of
the decision and recommendations from the committee.
This procedure must be completed before the student registers
for the Independent Studies-Capstone.
5. The Capstone Project should be
completed a month before the end of the semester in which the
student is scheduled for graduation. The student must
