College Admissions/Search Process

Since you play such a key role in your son or daughter’s life during the college search/admission process, we thought it might be helpful to offer some tips on what you and your son or daughter should expect during this transitional period. Just remember - take it one step at a time!

Second half of junior year: It’s time to meet with the guidance counselor about senior class schedules. Make sure college prep courses are scheduled!

Spring of junior year: Gather information about colleges. Go to college fairs, search web sites, and visit the high school guidance counselor. Also, it’s time to take the SAT/ACT and plan to take it at least twice.

Late spring of junior year: Narrow down the choices. Consider and weigh cost, size, location, and other factors that may be important to you and your son/daughter.

Summer before senior year: Visit as many colleges/universities as you can.

Beginning of senior year: Find out which college representatives will be visiting the high school. Schedule and take SAT/ACT. Begin filling out applications.

Fall of senior year: Submit applications to the most desired colleges or universities. Attend Open Houses.

January of senior year: Begin completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Submit no later than March 1st. Already been accepted? Congratulations!!! Return for a follow-up visit. Expect a phone call from an LHU student or professor.

Spring of senior year: Narrow down your final choice by digging deeper! Talk to faculty members, examine all the financial aid options, etc. Make a list of all “pros” and “cons.” Pay the deposit – Beat the May 1st deadline!!
