Portfolio Guidelines for Bachelor of Fine Arts applicants
Applicants to the BFA are requested to submit a portfolio of their work. The portfolio should contain 15 to 20 art works and may be presented in the form of actual artwork, 35mm slides, or a CD. The portfolio should reflect the candidate’s strengths in their primary area of interest but should also represent an appreciable skill level in at least one additional studio area. Students are encouraged to include examples of drawings in their portoflio.

Applicant Statement
Candidates for the BFA program should submit a statement of approximately 150 words along with the portfolio. The statement should be reflective of their personal artistic intentions and summarize their artistic interests, goals and experiences. Specific information along these lines will greatly assist us in placing the individual within our program and ensure the compatibility of the facilities with the student’s future artistic goals.

The BFA degree in studio art is an honors program in which students are expected to excel in their chosen studio discipline. Achieving this will involve both willingness to experiment as well as sustained skill development. As the BFA student progresses in the program, the student will be expected to be focused and productive in their studio work as well as to develop a consistent level of quality. The student should also be highly motivated and prepared to take full advantage of the academic experience and environment. Accepted applicants will be expected to actively involve themselves in the diverse intellectual challenges offered by the University setting.

The BFA the program is selective. Those candidates who are best prepared to achieve these goals will be given the highest consideration for entry into the program.

Portfolios will be reviewed four times per year on the following dates: November 7th, December 7th, February 7th and April 7th and by request. Please contact Chairperson Ray Heffner to arrange additional times for portfolio review.

Works can be picked up after being viewed by the department. Please include contact information in the letter. Portfolios that are mailed should have a sturdy re-usable carton in order to return the work. Return postage must be provided. Please indicate amount of insurance applied to the cost of shipping.
