Statement:
"To provide the
opportunity for individuals with disabilities to gain confidence and
dignity through participation in sports, recreation and related
educational programs." The Lock Haven Community has asked us to put together a sports program for individuals with disabilities in conjunction with a community based organization so that throughout the year, a sport or more may be ongoing. This will allow individuals with disabilities to join teams and compete in the available sport. For this we have chosen BOWLING!! |

Justification Statement (legal support)
IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires public school systems to develop appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEP's) for each child. IDEA provides equal opportunity for non-academic and extracurricular activities.
ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act extended the civil rights protection for individuals with disabilities to all areas of American life (employment, public accommodation, transportation, telecommunications, etc.) In regards to APE, it required that community recreational facilities be accessible and reasonable accommodations be made for individuals with disabilities. Physical educators must develop and offer programs for individuals with disabilities that give them the ability to participate in PE activity and sport experiences within the community.
Transition Services
IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires public school systems to develop appropriate Individualized Education Programs (IEP's) for each child. In many cases the IEP's for students will list transition services such as, "get out into the community and recreate." Bowling is a great way to get out and be an active part of the community. Clinton Lanes will sponsor the weekly involvement at their business to help support students with those requirements.
