MARINE BIOLOGY

This area of emphasis provides a heavy concentration on field oriented
studies in marine environments. It can lead either to employment or further
study in graduate or professional schools. Career opportunities for
marine biologists exist for individuals with all levels of education. Employers
include State and Federal government offices and laboratories, educational
institutions, industries, magazines, book publishers, television, radio, legal
firms, environmental societies and many others.
This study option requires nine semester hours of course work in marine
biology. Marine Biology courses are taught only during summer sessions at the
Wallops Island Marine Science Center. Classes are offered in three-week sessions
at this facility thus it is necessary to spend a minimum of nine weeks in summer
sessions. Students may obtain all nine hours of credit during one summer but it
is recommended that this be spread out over more than one summer.
Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania is a member of the Wallops Island Marine
Science Consortium, which is composed of 17 universities and colleges from
five states. The Consortium
operates the Marine Science Center. This
center is located on the Delmarva Peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and
Chesapeake Bay adjacent to the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Wallops
Island, Virginia. The Marine
Science Center provides ready access to wetlands and barrier islands as well as
inshore and offshore ocean habitats. Other resources available for student use
in the immediate area include the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the
Assateague National Seashore.
