Community Based Research and Service Learning Activities Lock Haven University 

Advertising Campaign Development (Jour 496)

  1. Service Learning Component: These students work with community organizations in Clinton County to assist them with their advertising needs.  Projects include developing radio and television ads, newsletters, websites, direct mailings, and brochures.
  2. Community Partners: YMCA Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Clinton County Cooperative Extension and 4-H, United Way The School, and the Salvation Army

Community Health Organization Management (HLTH410)

  1. Service Learning Component: Each student collaborates with a community health organization and provides 20 hours of community service support including, but not limited to, program planning, implementation, fund raising, grant writing and outcome tracking.
  2. Community Partners: Over 50 community health organizations in Clinton and Lycoming County

Consumer Health (HLTH 315)

  • Community Based Research: Research is being done on HIV testing issues within an at-risk population in rural Pennsylvania and the reasons for seeking or avoiding HIV testing from a rural community-based AIDS service organization.

David Bower and Beth McMahon

  1. Community Based Research: Worksites are contacted and evaluated as to their providing comprehensive worksite health promotion programs. A comprehensive evaluation of the activities and offerings are evaluated then recommendations for meeting the guidelines of Health People 2010 are provided. Services are provided by appropriate LHU students and community organizations

Faculty Study (GEOS499)

  • Community Based Research: Data has been collected on the geological framework of the valley as well as surface water and groundwater samples.  They are analyzed for chemical parameters.

Health Science Club

  1. Service Learning Component: “Adopt a School Project” The students work closely with the two highest poverty elementary schools and identify the 25 most needy families and work with LHU faculty to completely provide all their Christmas needs.
  2. Community Partners: Robb Elementary School and Dickey Elementary School and various corporate sponsors such as Woolrich, Nike shoes, Wal-Mart.

Health Science Club

  1. Community Based Research: The two most poverty stricken elementary schools are adopted and a needs assessment is administered to the faculty and staff that identify educational and supportive activities our students can provide to enhance the learning environment. Services and programs include such activities as mentoring at risk youth; dental care lessons, manners and general health concerns.

Honors Psychology (HONR180)/p>

  • Community Based Research: Students obtain a client, write a proposal, execute their research, and write a report.  The two projects that are currently taking place are: survey research and focus groups with students on sexual harassment, and survey research and focus groups on why students don’t vote.

Independent Study (GEOS499)

  1. Community Based Research: A student did an independent study on the impact of acid mine drainage from the Beech Creek on the Bald Eagle Creek in Clinton County.  Student collected water samples for several months in an attempt to delineate sources of surface water pollution and the inter-relationship between various land use practices in the watershed area.  The findings were then presented to the BCWA.

Interpersonal and Leadership Skills (PSYC235)

  1. Service Learning Component: Students complete twenty hours of community service learning projects, which involve lessons on leadership and teambuilding. Students then write a summary essay on what they learned about the particular issue on which they were working.>

  2. Community Partners: Second Mile, Women’s Center, Salvation Army, and area nursing homes.

Literacy Corps (READ210)

  1. Service Learning Component: Undergraduate students receive training as volunteer adult literacy tutors and provide tutoring for adults enrolled in local Adult Basic Education and Literacy programs.  Reflective activities include maintenance of an electronic journal of their experiences during the semester.

Oral History Course (HIST314)

  • Community Based Research: Eight students a semester collaborate with individuals or institutions in the community and a set of interviews are given which give visibility to a hidden aspect of the community

  • Community Partners: Clinton County Historical Society and a variety of other community based institutions

  • Faculty: Janet Irons, Ph.D., Professor, History, Political Science, and Economics

Recreation Resource Management (RECR420)

  1. Service Learning Component: These students complete a service based assignment where they work in collaboration with a local/regional agency that is looking to expand or build some type of facility that is directly related to recreation.  The students work directly with a supervisor at the agency; determine their wish list, and then collect/research comparable resources.  The students also develop quasi-designs of buildings, trails, pool, etc.  The students then compile their gatherings into a very usable narrative resource that includes a binder of the collected information.  Students then present their work to a group of representatives (usually a board or township supervisors).

Community Partners: Bald Eagle State Park: Bass Tournament Fishing Ramp/Pavilion Area and Environmental Interpretive Center, Krislund Kamp: Multi-Purpose Hiking Trail, Environmental Interpretive Center, and Recreation Storage Facility, Loyalsock Township: Playground and Historic Interpretive Trail, Multi-dimensional sliding board for pool, and Zero-depth pool, Woodward Township, Riverview Park: Basketball Court Complex, and the Jersey Shore YMCA: Conversion of Bowling Alley

  1. Community-Based Research: A SSHE grant was completed for “HIV Testing Issues Within At-Risk Population in Rural Pennsylvania and the Reasons for Seeking or Avoiding HIV Testing from a Rural Community-Based AIDS Service Organization”.

  2. Community Partners: AIDS Resource, Williamsport, PA

  3. Funding Sources: SSHE grant for $4,000

  4. Student Involvement: there would be funding to utilize a student from LHU

Frederick W. Shulze

  1. Community-Based Research: research on intervention that would attempt to demonstrate how personal contact over the phone and mail between case management intern and people with HIV/AIDS in rural areas decrease feelings of isolation, depression, and suicide risk

  2. Community Partners: AIDS Resource, Williamsport, PA

  3. Community Research Site: National Suicide Prevention Foundation

  4. Funding Sources: Foundation grant for $20,000

  5. Student Involvement: hopefully intern placed at AIDS Resource would be from Lock Haven University

Systems Analysis & Design (CISC306)

  • Service Learning Component: Students work in groups of four or five with companies and organizations in the Clinton County area for the purpose of developing a needed database management system or Web site (with some degree of complexity).  Students present their prototypes to the client companies, the class, and interested individuals.

  • Community Partners: Avis Building Supply, Beech Creek Hotel Restaurant, Clinton County SPCA, Croak Hollow Herb Farm, Eisemann’s Jewelers, Glennon Infirmary, Goose and Gander, Great Island Presbyterian Church, Haffley Insurance, Keller & Munro, Lock Haven Hospital, Lock Haven University Student Recreation Center, Piper Aviation Museum, Relay for Life, Rockview State Prison (Centre County), Sand Piper Designs, Weaver & Probst, Clinton County Fair Association, Clinton County SPCA, Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven.
