  • General Science

  • Social Studies

The secondary education degree and certification program will prepare you to teach in middle schools and high schools, grades 7-12. You will major in your chosen area of study within its own department, where you will gain the knowledge to effectively teach your subject area.

The Secondary Education program includes
numerous field experiences integrated into the coursework, two “blocks” of courses in pedagogy, two subject-specific teaching methods courses, and a semester-long student teaching internship. Student teaching is typically divided into two seven week assignments, one in a junior/middle school and one in a high school. Most assignments are within a 50-60 mile radius of the LHU campus, but some students opt to student teach in the Philadelphia area or abroad in a country such as Australia, Spain, England, Zagreb, Croatia, or Ireland.

Facilities

The Stevenson Library houses a Media Center where students can use and sign out various technologies including laptop computers, digital cameras, digital video cameras, graphing calculators, computer interfaced probeware, and various assistive devices. There are two Science and Math Resource and Technology Centers (SMaRT Centers) where students can access curricular and technological resources. Classrooms are also equipped with SmartBoards allowing PowerPoint presentations and providing interface with the Internet.

Career Opportunities

After completing your student teaching and graduating, you will be recommended to the Pennsylvania State Department of Education for certification. When certified, you will be qualified to teach throughout Pennsylvania and the U.S. There is currently a high demand for secondary education teachers due to the retirement of many of the “babyboomer” teachers. You may want to continue directly to graduate school for your master's degree. Some of our recent graduates have been accepted to Clarion University, Carnegie Mellon, West Virginia University, Central Washington State University, University of Scranton, and others.

To enhance your marketability for employment after graduation or for acceptance into graduate school, you will develop a digital professional portfolio during your senior year which describes your field experiences and teaching accomplishments and credentials. This not only demonstrates your academic abilities and experiences, but also highlights your expertise in using instructional technology.

Faculty

Our faculty all have experience teaching in secondary schools and have their terminal degrees in teacher education in their discipline. These faculty members either advise or co-advise all of the majors. Several serve on state and national committees in their areas of expertise and have published articles in various journals. Our program was awarded a Faculty Professional Development Grant from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education for professional development in special education. In addition, our program was awarded a University Teamwork and Collaboration Award.

“I have realized lately how far
I have come.
I have grown more comfortable with the knowledge
I have and the
fact that I can actually teach.
I do want to
thank you for pushing me over these years.
The lessons were hard ones to take for me sometimes, but they have
all helped to
make me the person
I am today.”

Patrick Hausamann '08

“I just wanted to let you know how much I learned during my time at school, and to thank you for
all the help you have given me. I really think teaching is what I should be doing in life and can't thank you enough for your help.”

Michael Nines, '08

“There is
nothing that
I love more
than helping my students reach
their dream
of being
a teacher.”
