Early in the summer of 2001, I agreed to pilot-teach a large section class of ENGL110, Dimensions of Literature during the following fall semester. The Linda J. Emanuel Teaching Learning Center had that same spring held a workshop with Gerard Aloisio from the Minnesota State University in Mancato relating some of his experiences teaching large sections of General Education Music classes. Intrigued with Aloisio's ideas, I began preparing during the summer to the teach the class in Hamblin Hall, which was equipped with large screen video and computer capabilities, plus lapel and hand-held microphones to facilitate large class discussions. I prepared daily Power Point presentations to show goals and objectives for each class, as well as numerous multi-media demonstrations to demonstrate literary techniques. As the student evaluations demonstrate, these techniques engaged the students in genuine learning experiences.
