Foreign Languages

Lock Haven University offers a bachelor of arts degree in Foreign Languages with concentrations in French and Spanish. Along with developing a high degree of proficiency in the target language, you will take courses in the literatures and the cultures of communities where French or Spanish is used. We will prepare you for and build on a required study-abroad experience at one of LHU's partner universities for a semester or at a university of your choice during the summer in a country where the target language is spoken. You will not only gain a greater understanding of the language and the cultures, but will also enhance your marketability for future employment or for entrance into graduate school.

Why Study French and Spanish at LHU?

  • At LHU, language learning is both practical and challenging, with an emphasis on both oral communication and critical thinking.
  • Faculty are all native speakers of the target languages they teach, have earned doctorates and are active scholars in their fields.
  • Flexible requirements enable students to tailor the foreign language learning to their interests.
  • A foreign language major or minor at LHU can be combined with any other major. The most popular ones are International Studies, Early Childhood Education, Health Sciences, Criminal Justice, Social Work, and English.
  • Small classes ensure close student-faculty interaction. Classrooms and faculty offices are in the same building, promoting easy interaction between faculty and students in and outside the classroom.
  • Learning a foreign language at LHU is a part of the school's international mission. Along with the Institute for International Studies and its exchange programs, LHU's curriculum and extra-curricular activities prepare students to live and work in a globalized world.
  • Currently students may choose to study French or Spanish. The program includes active French and Spanish Clubs, as well as a French & Francophone and a Spanish & Hispanic Film Series.
  • Students must take a minimum of 24 credits in the target language beyond Level IV of basic language instruction.
  • Core requirements for the major include 9 semester hours of literature and culture in the target language.
  • Advanced courses explore such topics as linguistics, French and Francophone or Spanish and Hispanic literatures, cultures, and films.
  • All students in the major must study abroad, either a full-semester or a summer immersion program (minimum of 6 credits). If you study during the academic year at one of LHU's partner institutions, you will pay the same tuition as LHU tuition, and your credits automatically transfer.
