Our Mission:

The Lock Haven University Psychology Department shall provide all students with a foundation in the science of development, behavior, and mental processes. Faculty shall engage psychology majors in a rigorous program that encompasses theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of psychology and enables pursuit of further education and careers.

Our Philosophy:

Psychology is a science, a data-based scientific study of development, behavior, and mental processes. All students, regardless of major will benefit from the foundation in critical thinking, the scientific method, and development, behavior and mental processes that our introductory courses provide.

Psychology is a broad field, encompassing theoretical, experimental, and applied areas. Our majors will enjoy a quality program that exposes them to many of the subfields of psychology. Our program intentionally provides a broad education, introducing students to as many areas of psychology as possible.

Psychology is a field that provides a wealth of opportunities, both immediately after graduation and upon advanced educational training. Our students will be prepared to take the next step in their career path, be it by obtaining a job or beginning graduate study.

Psychology sets the stage for lifelong learning, providing everyone with vital skills and a curiosity about the world.

Our Programs:

The Lock Haven University Psychology Department offers two programs, leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. We also offer an 18-credit minor. More information on those programs can be found by clicking on the links to the left.

The Psychology Department is also part of an interdisciplinary minor in Leadership Studies. The minor is coordinated by Dr. James Bean and includes courses in psychology, business, and communications. More information can be found by following the Leadership Minor link to the left.

Program Outcomes

The Department of Psychology at Lock Haven University strives to adhere to the educational objectives for undergraduate psychology as outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA has recently updated its guidelines, now called APA 2.0. The Department of Psychology is working to align its current courses with these new guidelines, found here

Each course in the Department of Psychology has specific learning objectives associated with it. To ensure consistency across professors, an overall set of objectives for each course is approved by the University Curriculum Committee (UCC), although each professor may measure those objectives differently.
General Education Outcomes
The Department of Psychology at Lock Haven University plays a valuable role in the University's general education curriculum. The general education curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad base of skills and competencies, including oral and written communication, critical thinking, mathematical and computational skills, and knowledge of the natural science, behavioral/historical/social science, and philosophy/literary/aesthetic areas of study. The Department of Psychology contributes heavily to the knowledge of behavioral/historical/social science area through PSYC100 (Introduction to Psychological Science), PSYC102 (Child Development), PSYC103 (Adolescent Development), and PSYC111 (Psychology of Early Childhood). We also offer several courses involving written communication (e.g., PSYC204 and PSYC409) and critical thinking (e.g., PSYC202).
