Public Relations
Possible careers for graduates of the Public Relations-Advertising emphasis with a special interest in public relations
Our program is designed to train students as analysts, creative thinkers, writers, planners and policy makers in public relations. The field of public relations can be understood as a way of communicating the value, services, product. or mission of an organization to the public as well as getting feedback from the public. Most employers recognize seven broad areas of public relations: (1) special events planning, (2) media use, (3) public speaking, (4) fundraising, (5) programming, (6) research, and (7) writing or editing. Career opportunities in public relations include entry-level positions in corporate relations, public opinion research, nonprofit and education fundraising, political campaigning and trade association lobbying.

Advertising
Possible careers for students taking the Public Relations-Advertising emphasis with a special interest advertising
Advertising is designed to educate students about the role of advertising, public relations and marketing communication in business and in the social and economic orders. The advertising emphasis seeks to acquaint students with advertising in a variety of contexts and from a number of different viewpoints. It attempts to explain why businesses and others use advertising as a form of communication: how advertising affects the mass media; how advertising is used by consumers in making buying decisions; how advertising is controlled and regulated; and what effects advertising has on the economy. People who work in advertising include artists, statisticians, writers, psychologists, salespeople, researchers, designers, managers, account planners, analysts, and others. Studying advertising will not train the student in any one of the specialized skill areas, but will give the students an overall understanding of how these skills are brought together and used to help solve advertising communication problems.
