The Computer
Science (CS) and Computer Information Science (CIS) programs have
been superseded by the new Applied
Computer Science and Information Systems program. As a
result, the CS and CIS programs will stop accepting new students
starting in January 2011.
Students currently enrolled in
either Computer Science or Computer Information Science will be
allowed to either complete their degree or switch to the new
program.
The degree in Computer Science (CS) is guided by a set of
objectives and covers the theory of computable processes and structures. This program encompasses three broad areas: information processes, information processing systems, and methodologies. Students are prepared for employment in industry as programmers and software engineers, emphasizing scientific and mathematical programming, as well as systems level programming. The Computer Science program offers both a major and minor in Computer Science.
The degree in Computer Information Science (CIS) is guided by a set of
objectives and focuses on the application of computer science and the functional areas of management. In this program of study, students will acquire a foundation of knowledge and skills that qualify them for positions as systems analysts, application programmers, database administrators, and information center specialists. The Computer Information Science program offers both a major and minor in Computer Information Science.
Although both of these programs focus on different aspects of computer technology, the department encourages the graduates of either program to gain a broad base of theoretical and practical experience in all areas of computing and management.
