Lock Haven University proudly supports a Criminal Justice Club on the main campus and at the Clearfield Campus.  This is a student run organization.  Membership is composed of students at all points of study during the pursuit of the degree and freshmen are encouraged to get involved with the organization and attend meetings.

The Criminal Justice Club is supported with a budget from the Student Cooperative Council.  The club engages in a variety of activities each semester.  Activities are selected and led by the student members.  Examples are:  sponsor of guest speakers on campus, field trips to sites of interest to criminal justice majors (examples include: the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, the Police Museum in New York City, and a Washington, DC site visit).  Recently, the Clearfield club, the Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association, took a trip to Riker’s Island in New York.

The club also engages in fund raisers periodically and the membership serves as resources to prospective students to answer major related questions.

Club membership and involvement is a good way to engage in meaningful experiences that allow students to explore a variety of criminal justice disciplines. Meetings are held at least twice a month.

2009 Press Release - In the spring of 2009, Lock Haven University’s Clearfield Campus Criminal Justice Club, Alpha Kappa Omega, was formally awarded a chapter into the American Criminal Justice Association’s Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE).  Focusing on community, campus, and departmental service, Alpha Kappa Omega has been involved in activities including the Clearfield Rotary Club’s Election Day Pancake Dinner, fish stocking with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and New Student Orientation Day.

In addition to helping others through service, the group is actively scheduling field trips, fund raising, and selecting an individual for the Outstanding Criminal Justice Student Award.  Under the direction of Dr. Michael J. McSkimming, criminal justice professor, future plans include visiting Houtzdale Prison, assisting in the Clearfield and Curwensville Rotary Club Golf Outing, raising money for Haiti Relief, and participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program.  Currently, there are 22 active members of the Clearfield Campus Criminal Justice Club.

Dr. Marianne Hazel, Clearfield Campus Interim Dean, commented, “The students and Dr. McSkimming are certainly making a difference on our campus and in our surrounding areas.  We are certainly honored to be recognized as part of a national chapter, and are hoping that our club continues to grow.”  For more information regarding the criminal justice program, please visit

Alpha Phi Sigma

(National Honor Society in Criminal Justice)

In fall 2007, Lock Haven University established a local chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.  Our local chapter is known as Iota Sigma.  Dr. Fennell sponsored the effort, as advisor, to found the Iota Sigma chapter at Lock Haven.  The national headquarters is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Students belonging to this club must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher, must be in the top 35% of the class, must have completed three semesters at LHU, and must have completed four required courses of criminal Justice classes declared as a Criminal Justice major, minor, or Law field leading to a baccalaureate or graduate degree.  As of fall 2009, 36 students have been inducted into the Criminal Justice Honor’s Club.

The Lock Haven Criminal Justice Honor Society is very active.  In 2009 they sponsored an Adopt-A-Family for Christmas.  They have also conducted the CJ Pre-advising Program for freshmen and some sophomores to answer questions regarding minors, how to access online degree audit, how to register for classes, explain the degree requirements are for the Criminal Justice major, what an internship entails, and what Criminal Justice organizations exist on campus. A “Meet and Greet” is held for new members.  Anyone eligible to join the club, meeting all the requirements, will be sent an email to see if they are interested.

If you have any questions concerning the club, please contact one of the officers listed below:
