NCAA National Leadership
Conference: Each Spring, four LHU athletes are nominated to
serve as LHU’s representative at the NCAA Leadership Conference held
annually in May. NCAA officials review the submissions and make
their selection by mid-April. Recent attendees: Fabiana
Gomez (volleyball), Derek Caldwell (wrestling), JaKia Gumby (women’s
track and field), Inga Kurgonaite (volleyball), Diane Wall (women’s
soccer), Kranthi Senadhi (men’s basketball), Diana Strizki
(lacrosse), Jim Collins (wrestling).

NCAA Division II Leadership Academy: NCAA Regional event that
celebrates the special attributes that exist in Division II, and
provides student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators with
tools to provide leadership at the local level. Lock Haven is in the
Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Region, which is slated for its next academy
from September 25-27, 2009, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Recent attendees: Chris Edelman (men’s track and field), Ilia Lopez
(softball), Sobhan Namvar (wrestling), LeighAnn Miller (cross
country).
NCAA Degree Completion Award: The purpose of the Division II
Degree-Completion Award program is to provide financial assistance
to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first
baccalaureate degree. Each institution is allowed to submit three
candidates who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have
received athletics financial aid. Factors considered are academic
performance, financial circumstances, athletic achievement and
involvement in campus and community activities. Timeline:
Applications due early April. Recent award winners: Phil
Liversedge (men’s soccer), Patrick Long (men’s soccer), Monica
Mangual (women’s soccer), Allison Furry (volleyball), Courtney
Hughes (softball/field hockey).
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship: The NCAA awards up to 174
postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The
scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically
and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate
athletics competition. The one-time grants of $7,500 each are
awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports, and must
be used for graduate tuition. Each sports season (fall, winter and
spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29
scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time,
non-renewable grants. Timeline: Must apply immediately following
season; usually January, March, and May deadlines. Recent award
