Minority Book Scholarship
The Minority Book Scholarship is distributed based solely on academic performance each semester and full time status. At LHU, 2.0 is the minimum GPA required to graduate, therefore, any American ethnic student who achieves or exceeds a 2.0 is eligible. American ethnic students include African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and Asian/Pacific Islanders. The Scholarship is available to the students in the semester (or summer) following the Spring or Fall semester that deserving grades are achieved. The award is based on the LHU Ethnic GPA Report and is in the form of a monetary credit at the S.C.C. Student bookstore for books, school supplies or graduation supplies. Any unused awards carry over to the summer sessions to be used on a first come first serve basis for ethnic students enrolled in summer courses.
The primary benefit of the proposed Minority Book Scholarship Fund is its support of the retention program that is available to all ethnic students in good academic standing. Unlike other ethnic retention programs and scholarships, it is not be dependent upon club membership, exceptionally high or low grades, attendance and class schedule apparent economic background of one’s parents, or competition due to availability of resources. Because the Minority Book Scholarship fund is potentially accessible to all ethnic students, there is no intimidation factor should a student mention it to friends or encourage other ethnic students to improve or maintain good academic standing. Participation is attainable and is based only on the student’s individual achievement. Because it is awarded in the following semester, it encourages the student to continue and provides a reason to return to LHU, thus directly affecting retention. The student has a positive incentive at the beginning of the semester to maintain academic good standing. The scholarship encourages positive participation in the academic community as students are recognized for their achievements.
