Why Major In Economics?

If you want to understand the economic problems and issues society confronts, an economics major is relevant for you. You’ll analyze such topics as:

  • inflation

  • unemployment

  • economic growth and recession

  • money, banking, and interest rates

  • energy

  • pollution

  • health care

  • poverty

  • income distribution

  • taxation

  • technological change

  • monopolistic activity

  • international trade and finance

  • economies of other nations

Economics also examines the individual business firm and how markets for particular resources, goods, and services operate. Aspects studied include:

  • supply of and demand for labor

  • product demand

  • price determination

  • product distribution

  • forms of seller competition

  • profit and loss

  • government regulations

In addition, economics relates to personal economic concerns such as one’s job, wages, taxes, investments, and cost of living.
