PURPOSE

The rehearsal of fire/evacuation drills is imperative to ensure that all employees and students have a thorough knowledge of the proper action to take in the event of a fire.

SCOPE

University-wide.

PROCEDURE

Fire/evacuation drills are to be held monthly for all residence halls and semi-annually for all academic and administration buildings.

The Resident Assistant/Resident Director (RA/RD) will review the fire/evacuation plan with all residents at the beginning of the academic year and all employees will be informed of the fire/evacuation plan at the beginning of their employment.

All residence hall drills are to be unannounced and varied in times and scenarios as to simulate real emergencies.  Academic and administration building occupants will be notified as to the day and time of their drill.

Residence hall drills will be conducted and planned by the RA/RD.  The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will plan and conduct all drills in the academic and administration buildings.  Drills are to be pre-planned with all personnel who will be involved as to their individual responsibility during the drill, as well as the scenario and time.

Drills involve the joint efforts of Student Life, Law Enforcement, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Facilities/Maintenance Departments.

Before a drill is performed, it is necessary to notify any agency or department that monitors the University’s fire alarm system.

Residence Hall Process:

  • Alarm pulled by Resident Director
  • Evacuation observed by RA/RD and Law Enforcement Officers
  • Evacuation time recorded by Law Enforcement
  • Facilities and Maintenance staff check for proper operation of alarms, exit and stairwell lights, and fire/smoke doors at least once a semester.
  • RA/RD and Law Enforcement Officers must ensure that all individuals who need help are assisted.
  • RA/RD and Law Enforcement randomly check student rooms to ensure compliance with evacuation requirements.
  • Law Enforcement to check headquarters to insure alarm relay is working properly.
  • Law Enforcement Officers will respond as if a real emergency in all situations.

Academic and Administrative Hall Process:

  • Alarm pulled by EHS Director
  • Evacuation observed by EHS and Law Enforcement Officers
  • Evacuation time recorded by Law Enforcement
  • Facilities and Maintenance staff check for proper operation of alarms, exit and stairwell lights, and fire/smoke doors.
  • Supervisors and instructors must ensure that all employees and students evacuate the building and individuals who need help are assisted.
  • Law Enforcement to check headquarters to insure alarm relay is working properly.
  • Law Enforcement Officers will respond as if a real emergency in all situations.

Once the all clear has been given, Law Enforcement will reset the alarm system and complete the Fire/Evacuation Drill Observer Report (Attachment A), RA & RD will complete the Residence Halls Fire Drill Report. These forms are to be completed by the observers(s) of the drill and forwarded to Office of Environmental Health and Safety, where it will be reviewed for accuracy and discrepancies.

All actual alarms, whether they are false or real, may be counted as a fire drill if a Fire/Evacuation Drill Observer Report/Residence Hall Fire Drill Report is completed.

The Fire Safety policy #FS-001 has information regarding what actions are to be taken during a fire emergency.
