Elementary Education - Current Requirements

Every Semester

  • Meet with your advisor prior to class registration

Every Academic Year

  • Secure Background Clearances
    • The Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check (Act 34)
    • The Federal Criminal History Record (Act 114)
    • The Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151)

Freshman Year

  • Take the 3 PRAXIS I Exams listed below (All students must have passing scores on PRAXIS I in order to register for EDUC 202 (Children's Literature)
    • 10710 PPST Reading
    • 20720 PPST Writing
    • 10730 PPST Math
  • Complete Diversity Profile
  • Complete Disposition Self-Evaluation and Action Plan in LiveText
  • Complete Technology Self-Evaluations in LiveText

Sophomore Year

  • Apply for Candidacy
    • Candidacy is formal admission as a candidate for an Elementary Education Teacher Certificate. Candidacy is required of all students taking 300 level classes or higher (in your major). A student may apply for candidacy at the completion of 45 credits (including 6 credits in English and 6 credits in Math); successful completion of PRAXIS I; and a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    • Application deadlines are October 1 (for Spring registration) and February 14 (for Fall registration)

Junior Year

  • Present Developing Portfolio (All observation hours must be completed prior to presenting your developing portfolio in the Junior Year of the program.) Hours include:
    • 20 Diversity Hours - 10 Hours in each Diversity Area identified in the Diversity Profile Plan. A Diversity Essay will be written using the Directions, Guidelines, and Rubric in your Developing Portfolio.
    • 60 Field Experience Hours - The 60 hours must meet all of the following specifications:
      • 16 hours in regular education from Intro to Elementary Ed - EDUC 105
      • 10 hours in regular education from the Elementary School - EDUC 204
      • 4 hours in regular education from Children's Literature - EDUC 202
      • 10 hours from Intro to Exceptionalities - SPEC 105
      • 10 hours in K-2
      • 10 hours in 3-4
      • 10 hours in 5-6
      • 10 hours in Special Ed
      • 20 hours in a learning environment
  • Apply for Professional Semester (BLOCK)
  • Pass PRAXIS II Exam - 20511 Fundamentals of Subjects: Content Knowledge

Senior Year

  • Apply for Student Teaching
  • Pass PRAXIS II Exam - 10011 Elementary Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment (prior to student teaching)
  • Present Senior Portfolio
  • Apply for Certification (Requires successful completion of all program requirements, PRAXIS Exams, and a Physical Examination.)
