Whether you are looking for an English-related job after college
or contemplating graduate school, keep in mind these tips

Preparation is essential before graduation

Plan ahead with your faculty advisor.  Tell him/her what you want to do after college or what you are interesting in doing. Your faculty advisor can assist you in taking the right courses for you career, and help you with many other things. So keep in close contact with your advisor.

Well-rounded courses are relevant to your career

Enroll in a variety courses that relate according to your field of interest. Take courses that not only interest you, but that will enhance your experience in the field you want to work in after graduation. Employers like to see a well-rounded background of courses.

Job experience is important
Get a job that will give you experience in the field you want after graduation. Even if you get a job on campus like at the library or Writing Center, your skills will be enhanced and it will look great on your résumé. The more well-rounded job experience you have as well as good references, the better you will succeed in the job market.

Build a résumé ahead of time
Keep a listing of jobs you have worked at, how long you worked, and what type of work you performed. Also keep a list of all the college clubs and organizations you have been involved in, any awards received, and any volunteer experience or other relevant experience you might have. This information will be important when you write your résumé.

Don't be afraid to start writing your résumé.  You never know when you might need it, so write one and keep it current. Keep in mind that building and writing a résumé takes time. Career Services and the Writing Center can help you construct one.
