Financial Aid Services Track  (Track FAS)
Understanding financial aid brings you one step closer to achieving your dreams.
This presentation will cover the most common types of financial aid, how to apply for them, and much more.
Office hours are 9am to 4pm weekdays.
You’ll find a wealth of information on our home page.  Check it out!
Be sure to check into “free” money, like scholarships and grants, first.
Remember to meet all deadlines.
We encourage you to file the FAFSA online.  You and your parent(s) will need a PIN number, which can be obtained in advance via the web site.
Being accepted to Lock Haven University, even as Exploratory Studies, enables most students to be considered for financial aid.
Making satisfactory academic progress is important!
At LHU, full time undergraduate students must earn at least 21 new credit hours during the fall and spring semesters and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.  PA State Grant recipients must earn at least 24 new credits during fall and spring.
Federal SAP Requirements:
A full-time, undergraduate student must earn a minimum of 21 new credit hours in each two semesters of enrollment.  S/he must also maintain a 2.000 minimum cumulative GPA.
Every student is responsible for knowing and understanding LHU’s federal SAP policy in its entirety.  The complete SAP policy is available online at
www.lhup.edu/financial-services/progress.htm.
PA State Grant Academic Progress Requirements:
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) requires that full-time, undergraduate PA State Grant recipients earn at least 24 new credit hours in each two semesters of enrollment to maintain academic eligibility for the state grant.
Every student is responsible for knowing and understanding PHEAA’s academic progress policy in its entirety.  For more information about PHEAA’s policy, please contact PHEAA at 800-692-7392.
If none of these items apply to you, you are a dependent student for financial aid purposes and will need your parent’s help to complete the FAFSA.  However, if you have other, very extraordinary circumstances and, therefore, feel you should be considered an independent student, please contact Student Financial Services to discuss your situation.
Remember that it’s important to meet deadlines, so gather this information early.  If your tax returns are not available, report estimated income information on the FAFSA.  You may correct the information later.
The Student Aid Report is a compilation of your FAFSA information.   If you include your email address when completing the FAFSA, your SAR will be emailed to you within a few days.  Check the SAR for errors.  If you find any, follow the instructions on the SAR to make corrections electronically or by mail.  You will then receive a revised SAR.  Like all important papers, remember to save the SAR for your records.
Student Financial Services estimates how much it costs you to attend LHU.  The difference between what it costs to attend college and how much you and your family are expected to contribute is your financial need.
The Cost of Attendance is an estimate of a student’s educational expenses for a period of enrollment and includes tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board, transportation, personal and miscellaneous expenses.
Actual costs for the upcoming academic year will be available in July.
Several factors are considered when calculating the amount your family is expected to contribute toward your education, including parent’s income and (in some cases) assets, student’s income, parent’s age and need for retirement income, household size, and the number of family members attending college.  Your Expected Family Contribution will remain the same no matter which college you choose, but may change from year to year depending on your family’s financial situation.
If you or your family have a change in circumstances, notify Student Financial Services.  If conditions allow, such changes may warrant a re-evaluation of your financial aid eligibility and a revision of your award package.
Student Financial Services begins sending Financial Aid Award Letters to new students in March. Transfer students do not receive award letters until they pay the admission deposit and LHU has received and evaluated all final academic transcripts from all previous postsecondary institutions.  The Award Letter informs the student of the financial aid for which he or she qualifies.  Keep the student copy of the Award Letter in your financial aid file for future reference.
Incoming freshmen must complete the LHU Scholarship application at www.lhup.edu/admissions/scholarships/index.htm by the February deadline.
Interested transfer students may contact the Admissions Office for information about the Dean’s Transfer Scholarship.
For information about athletic grants-in-aid, contact either the head coach of the particular sport or the LHU Department of Athletics.
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA; 800-692-7392) administers some scholarship programs.  For more information, visit their web site at www.pheaa.org.
Students are required to notify Student Financial Services of any private scholarships or other outside funding received.
To find other scholarships, you may check with your local library or high school counselor.  And don't forget to check out local businesses and local civic, service, and community organizations.
By completing the FAFSA, you will be considered for federal and state grant programs, including the Federal Pell, ACG, SMART, and SEOG Grants as well as the PA State Grant.  Non-Pennsylvania students are encouraged to contact their home state higher education agencies for information about state grants and/or scholarships.
For the 2010-2011 academic year, Federal Pell Grant awards range from $1176 to $5550.
For 2010-2011, first year students qualify for up to $750; second year students qualify for up to $1300.
For more information about the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), go to http://studentaid.ed.gov.
For 2010-2011, students qualify for up to $4000 per year.  For more information about the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, go to http://studentaid.ed.gov
Students who apply by the March 15th FAFSA deadline are automatically considered for FSEOG.
LHU typically awards eligible students $200-$800 per academic year.
PA residents must submit the FAFSA to the processor by May 1, which is the PA State Grant deadline.  Not a problem for students who complete the FAFSA by LHU’s deadline of March 15.  PHEAA begins notifying students of their PA State Grant eligibility in mid-May.  For 2010-2011 academic year, PA State Grant awards at LHU range from $500-$3507.
Students interested in campus jobs are encouraged to seek employment at their earliest convenience.
Jobs are available throughout the campus and, in come cases, off campus.  Students must find their own jobs.  Employment forms are available online at www.lhup.edu/studentemployment.  Student employees receive bi-weekly paychecks.
