PA State Grant Funding Reduction

Q&A

Q.  I’ve heard that PA State Grants may be lower for the 2008-2009 academic year.  Is that true?

A.  We’ve heard that’s a possibility, but we don’t know for sure and have no information to share at this time.

Q.  When will I know if state grants have been reduced?

A.  PHEAA typically establishes state grant award amounts by mid-May before they begin sending award notices to students.

Q.  If state grants are lower for 2008-2009, are there ways I can obtain additional funding?

A.  Make sure to apply for financial aid on time to ensure full consideration for all sources of financial aid.  LHU’s recommended FAFSA filing deadline is March 15th; however, the FAFSA will still be accepted after that date.  Undergraduate PA residents must file the FAFSA no later than May 1st to meet the PA State Grant application deadline.  On another note, Federal Pell Grant funding has been increased for the 2008-2009 academic year, which may help those students who qualify for that grant.  And lastly, students and parents may be able to borrow additional alternative loan and PLUS Loan funds to help offset any state grant reduction.
