Applications for benefits can be completed and submitted online through
the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Veterans ON-line
APPlication Website (VONAPP) http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp.
Applicants should use VONAPP if s/he is a U.S. military veteran, a
service member with at least 2 years of active duty, a member of the
Selected Reserve, or a spouse/dependent of a "service connected"
disabled or deceased veteran. If s/he has previously filed a claim for
education benefits, VONAPP should only be used if s/he is filing
for a different education benefit or if s/he is changing schools or
programs under the current benefit program.
If the benefit being applying for is not listed as an option on the VONAPP
form (REAP Chapter 1607 for example) check unsure for the benefit type,
and use the remarks section of the application to indicate which benefit
type is being applied for. To check the status of a pending claim,
contact the Regional Processing Office by calling 1-888-GI BILL 1
(1-888-442-4551).
Please make sure to fully complete and submit the application and all
supporting documents. Supporting documents can be submitted to the DVA
by uploading them to a computer and attaching them to the application;
by mailing them to the VA Regional Office at the address on the
confirmation page received after submission of the application; or by
faxing them to the VA Regional Office. To obtain a fax number, contact
the Regional Office at 1-800-827-1000.
Once all application materials have been submitted to the DVA, a copy of
these materials must be submitted to LHU’s Student Financial Services (SFS)
office for processing. Please provide a full copy of the VA application
submitted, DD-214 or NOBE, kicker contract (if applicable), and any
other supporting documentation submitted to the VA. Once the VA has
processed the application, the applicant will receive a Notice of
Eligibility stating that their benefit has been approved. A copy of this
documentation must also be submitted to the SFS.
Please note:
·
Service
members only need to apply for benefits through the DVA one time; they
do no to re-apply through the DVA each semester.
·
If a
student changes schools, programs of study, or is now eligible for a
different benefit (EX: a service member is now eligible for REAP) s/he
must file a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training
form via the VONAPP online system. A copy of this must also be submitted
to Student Financial Services.
·
To
coordinate payment of benefits for the upcoming summer sessions and
academic year, the Student Financial Services office contacts benefit
recipients annually (usually in April) via mail to find out their
intentions for upcoming semesters. To avoid a lapse in payment, renewal
applicants are encouraged to respond to the mailing as soon as possible.
·
In order
to provide the DVA with the most up to date, current information,
students are required to notify Student Financial Services immediately
upon any changes to their schedule.
