-------------------------------------------------------------------- PHESTIVAL of PHYSICS On Sunday November 2, 2003 at 4 PM the PHYSICS CLUB at Lock Haven University will be holding a physics demonstration show in Ulmer Planetarium. For about an hour, students and faculty will present demonstrations of physics principles before an audience. The presentations are meant to be entertaining and educational. This demo show will emphasize motion and mechanics, waves and oscillations, and thermodynamics. The show will include bangs and whistles, crashes and smashes, sprokets and rockets and much much more including audience participation. The show is for kids of all ages. It promises to be fun and you might learn something, too. The show is free and open to the public. The Physics Club does demonstration shows every fall and spring. This fall, for about an hour, students and faculty will present demonstrations of physics principles before an audience. The presentations are meant to be entertaining and educational. This show will emphasize motion and mechanics, waves and oscillations, and thermodynamics. The show will include a hovercraft, smoke rings, odd shaped soap films, a giant yo yo, and more. In the weeks prior to the show, Physics Club students and faculty will build and prepare their demonstrations. During the show they will present the demonstrations and explain the principles behind them. At times, there will be audience participation. After the show, members of the audience can talk with the presenters and try some of the demonstrations themselves. The show is sponsored by Lock Haven University, the Physics Club and by the Collaborative for Excellence in Teaching. The show is for kids of all ages and is free and open to the public. For more information contact John Reid (570-893-2078, jreid@lhup.edu). ============================================== Participants ========= Students ja Jared Adolf-Bryfogle jb Joe Ballard jd John DeFlavio kg Kelly Greenland tg Taneisha Greer il Ian Larose nl Nicole Lavallee km Kevin Mann rs Ray Sturdevant jt Jon Thornburg dt Dan Tomcavage Faculty ub Uma Belegundu mc Mike Cullin ag Anura Goonewardene jr John Reid jw Jim Wheeler Sponsors Physics Club Geology & Physics Dept CETP-PA Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation ================================== DEMOS by Presenter as of 24-Sep-03 Jared Adolf-Bryfogle drop objects tied to string John DeFlavio hover craft (throw objects and recoil) pull person on blanket across the floor smoke ring dropping stack of balls Kelly Greenland MC pennies - coat hanger pennies - on elbow pennies - on cross stitch ring - drop into bottle pennies - one drops straight down the other is projectile Taneisha Greer forensics Liquid nitrogen bannana & hammer flower ice cream rupper glove replace hand, shrinks and grows pop lid off can blow up balloon ping pong ball Ian LaRose masses hanging on string, pull quick and slow roller blades (push person) range of hearing catapult Jon Thornburg vaccuum shoot pencil through board angular momentum (wheel on chair, ball and bat on platform) roller blades (push person) yo yo with AG CO2 rocket bowling ball SHO Ray Sturdevant help John with angular momentum just drop two objects possibly monkey shoot Dan Tomcavage help others (will not be there) Uma Belegundu thin file surfaces Mike Cullin Anura Goonewardene AG John Reid coupled oscillators (resonance) drop string with bolts spaced at x^2 intervals suspend ping pong ball and golf ball in water and accelerate Jim Wheeler vaccuum shoot ping pong ball CO2 rocket cart bowling ball SHO trumpet with oscilloscope Unclaimed love meter and dipping bird
