Major: 3-2 Engineering
Fall 2013 Starting MS in Engineering Science

" I did receive an admit from Georgia Tech. ... It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am extremely happy and I look forward to getting my master's in engineering science. If you remember, the first time I went to see you in your office I was in my freshman year and on the verge of failing calc 1. How things change! I wanted to thank you for all your help, not just for the letters but also for introducing me to science and making this achievement possible. "

Major: 3-2 Engineering

"... mechanics, modern, and E&M really prepared me to do as well as I am. The physics at LHU is much more than just the general physics that most engineers are required to take, and so I feel like I know the material more in-depth. Right now I'm taking civil engineering classes like structural analysis and soil mechanics and I always do well in lab and lab reports because I set my standards to those from modern physics lab. "

"I started working at Coherent INC. I am now in training in Santa Clara, CA for two of coherent products. Coherent is a laser manufacturing company. We make different types of lasers from Ultra Fast to Ion and Diamond. I am employed as a Field Service Engineer for a portion of the east coast. Needless to say E&M2 is helping me a lot to understand how these things work. It really helps me talk to people about how they work. "

Major: 3-2 Engineering

“ Carbon Steel Inspection is taking me on as a field service worker. I will be using probes that they design and manufacture themselves. The probes use electromagnetic waves to test whatever equipment they need inspected. But they gave me the opportunity because I took all those physics courses at LHU, so thank you for the knowlegde.

“I'm two-thirds of the way through my Fermilab internship. I'm working in CDF with a team of experimental physicists on the cross-section of the top quark. We're finding the ratio of ttbar production from gluon-fusion compared to qqbar annihilation. …since the DOE is sponsoring my internship I will get my abstract published detailing what I have done. I have also completed a 10 page paper detailing everything I have done, and if it meets DOE requirements that too will be published.

“I definitely have a leg up on the other interns by visiting this past winter, and by taking all the courses that Lock Haven offered. My advisor was very impressed because there was very little he had to explain to me, and now he can't seem to find enough work for me to.”

“I’ve started working at the optics and photonics company in New Jersey called Thorlabs, Inc.. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m glad that you [Dr. Reid] and Dr. Wheeler wouldn’t let me graduate without optics experience, otherwise I’d be totally lost. “

"Just wanted to take a moment to thank Dr. Reid, Dr. Wheeler and Dr. Goonewardene for the time and attention that you guys continually give to students like me. I genuinely feel that by the time I left LHU, I was more prepared than not only the peers I have met in the industry, but many of the graduate students/post docs I speak with on a day to day basis." “I spend a tremendous amount of my time speaking with grad students, who I wish would have learned the same skills you taught us. For example, when I was in the UK a few months ago, we received a letter from a customer who complained about our products after obtaining a year worth of poor results. All I could think of is that if you were running that experiment, the first thing we would do would be to calibrate the movement so we knew exactly how much we were moving in each direction.”

Left Lock Haven: 2006
Major: Secondary Education in Physics and BS in Physics

“I've been offered and accepted a job teaching Physics in Anne Arundel School District in Maryland. The position is located at North County High School (near Baltimore) and includes College Prep., Honors and AP classes. Thanks for all of the help and advice throughout the years. I've really enjoyed my time at Lock Haven. “
Left Lock Haven: 2005
Major: Cooperative Engineering, Transfer to Temple University
Field Electrical Engineering

“I am graduating from Temple University in May with a BS in EE. … I wanted to tell you that my education I received from Lock Haven really gave me an advantage in Engineering school. I’ve been on Deans List every semester here and last semester won an Innovation award. I have been offered two jobs so far and have an opportunity to start my own company with two other students because we developed a new medical device. … Thanks for everything.”
Left Lock Haven: 2005
Major: Physics

“I'm at Clemson University in graduate school for Materials Science and Engineering. …The education I received at Lock Haven is coming in very handling here in grad school. Thanks a lot.“
Left Lock Haven: 2003
Major: Cooperative Engineering, Transfer to Penn State University
Field Aerospace Engineering

“I am in Ghana now working with the BMW franchise holders in the country as an IT person … I managed to start two companies here in Ghana, one an audio production/engineering company and the other, database development and web related stuff. “However, the best part of being in Ghana at this time apart from having family and friends close by is that I get to fly around in ultralight aircraft on the weekends. I'm earning the necessary hours to get a license for West Africa. “After such a break from school I'm confused with what to study as a graduate. I'm looking at Law, Business Administration and of course Aerospace. “
Left Lock Haven: 2002
Major: Cooperative Engineering, Transfer to Penn State University
Field Agricultural Engineering

“I now work for The Hershey Company in research and development. It looks as though the major has gotten bigger and I hope you are getting more and more students interested in it. I know I was more than prepared when I got to PSU. “
Left Lock Haven: 2000
Major: Engineering - transfered to Penn State
Field Electrical Engineering

"Thank you for your dedication to teaching and having the desire to see others learn. I am very thankful for the education I've received and have a great deal of respect for those who made it happen.

I started at Lock Haven University in 1999, transferred to Penn State in 2001 and graduated in 2003 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. I work for General Dynamics in State College where I design satellite communications equipment. It's a great job that I've been well prepared for with a good education from both LHU and PSU.

While my job is rewarding, I find most of my satisfaction comes from a volunteer group I've belonged to for over 14 years, and have recently had the chance to put my degree to work in that field...

I've been a volunteer with Civil Air Patrol (www.cap.gov) since I was 12. Among other things, CAP handles nearly 95% of all search and rescue missions within the United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. While I've always been involved as a search team member, within the past 2 years I've been able to add a new tool to our tool box. In short - it deals with locating missing aircraft and missing persons (the majority of CAP's searches) by tracking cell phones on the pilot/passengers or the missing person.

I've become a national resource for Civil Air Patrol and the Air Force assisting with search and rescue missions across the US for a little over a year. It's not as easy or as simple as Hollywood portrays it in movies or TV shows - it's a real science that takes reasoning, an education, and brain power. I was lucky enough to be in the right spot, at the right time, and with the right education (thanks to all of you and many other educators), and had the right ideas to put this technology to use. In it's first application we located an aircraft that had been missing for six days - we had no other leads on finding it until the cell phone technology was put to use. While the pilot was killed on impact, we were at least able to provide closure for the family during a difficult time. Since then, I've used this new tool on at least 6 other searches, of which 4 lives were saved (using this tool in conjunction with others in our tool box).

I wanted to share this with all of you - so you can know you've made a difference in yet another life. And that the difference you've made in my life will reach the lives of others.

Thanks for the great job you do!"

Left Lock Haven: 1991
Major: Cooperative Engineering, Transfer to Penn State University
Field Civil Engineering

“I graduated from Penn State in 1993 with a BS in Civil Engineering. I also received a BA in Natural Science from Lock Haven University as part of the 3/2 cooperative program. I am a member of Tau Beta Pi (the National Engineering Honor Society) and Chi Epsilon (the Civil Engineering Honor Society). I work as a Department of Defense civilian Civil Engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I divide my working career between military construction and civil works construction. On a note of local interest, I worked on the levees at Lock Haven just after starting work with the US Army Corps of Engineers. “I see from the web site that Jim Wheeler still teaches at Lock Haven. He is very fondly remembered by this former student. I took away, and still use some very important/basic skills, from his classes: linear regression analysis, deriving equations, and solving off beat problems with basic science. I still write programs in True BASIC. Jim Wheeler brought science and mathematics together for me for the first time. What could be better?”
