Meet Rick Goulet, Ph.D.

Education:

B.A. and M.A. – University of Alberta, Canada

Ph.D. (2003) – University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Professional interests and activities:

My Ph.D. is in Latin American History.  I wrote my dissertation on the history of 18th century Franciscan missions in the upper Amazon region of present day Colombia and Ecuador.  My main interest was to try to understand the missions from the indigenous peoples’ perspective as much as possible.  This proved difficult as all the documentation concerning these missions was written by the Franciscans and the native voice is muted.  However, since the missionaries were perpetually experiencing problems keeping the different native groups in the missions and the Franciscans constantly complained about the difficulties they experienced trying to convert these groups, it became clear that the Native Americans exercised considerable agency in this tropical frontier region.  My present research includes continuing with this project in order to eventually turn my dissertation into a book.  I have participated in several scholarly conferences, presenting papers, and plan to continue doing so in the future.

HONR101 Historical and Philosophical Studies II

The main objectives I have for the Honors course this Spring (2004) is to foster the development of critical thinking and writing skills while studying world history from 1400 to the present.  This will be done through reading and discussing a number of books and articles.  Rather than a strictly lecture-style class, there will be plenty of class discussions based on the assigned readings.  There will also be a significant amount of writing, both in the form of take-home essays and written exams.

Personal interests and activities:

Besides my teaching and scholarly activities, I enjoy many activities such as fly fishing, photography, camping, tennis and other sports.  All of these, however, have been curtailed recently due to my recent employment here at LHU and the fact that I have a young family.
