        Secretary-Treasurer of the Society for the Philosophic Study of the Contemporary Visual Arts (SPSCVA)

AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION:

Aesthetics (especially Philosophy of Literature and Film Theory)
 

19th and 20th Century Continental Philosophy (especially Existentialism and German Philosophy)

PHIL 102: FYE Ethics

We will examine the four major theories of ethics: religious authority, legal conventionalism, utilitarianism and the categorical imperative/golden rule, as well as arguments for moral relativism. Then we will discuss several of the most pressing contemporary moral issues, including the morality of war, abortion, drug use, premarital and extramarital sex and whether we have duties to animals and the environment. The course will conclude with in-class debates, where students will defend their own views on three issues not discussed in class.
