Meet Dr. Jim Strayer
Professional interests and activities: I am a number theorist, but have interests in all areas of mathematics. I have published two textbooks, one on linear programming (published in 1989) and one on number theory (published in 1994). I am currently working on a third textbook on recreational mathematics, designed to stimulate interest in mathematical concepts through puzzles and games. HONR105 Contemporary Issues in Math Although the topics vary dependent on the interests of the students enrolled, the honors course attempts to highlight the mathematics inherent in various facets of contemporary society. In the past, we have studied such topics as logical circuits within computers, cryptography, the art of M.C. Escher, fractal geometry, and, of course, puzzles and games. Personal interests activities: I collect wooden puzzle boxes, primarily from Japan. One room of my home is entirely devoted to my "puzzle museum." (Private showings are available upon request! Free admission!) I am currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Clinton County Women's Center.
